Engine Problems Already
Engine Problems Already
On 12/5 bought 04 Coupe with 15k miles, Prem, Aero, and Performance pkgs, this weekend added plenum spacer, z-tube, ff cats, having some fun and now have a tick/tap coming from the engine, DANG. Should I take the spacer and z-tube off before taking it in for service? Could this be a valve problem? Any ideas?
who did the work? are you throwing any CELs? Make sure its coming from the engine first. The Zs and Gs are very sensitive to exhaust changes. When I put test pipes on, it moved my exhaust just enough to get it to knock up against a brace under the car. Make sure the plenum spacer is sealed correctly. Back track everything to help find where the noise its coming from.

+1...if you determine everything is good to go and you still have that problem take it all off and take the car back to the dealer. Anything that has to do with the dealer replacing or fixing something, they will try their damnest to try and avoid it at all cost.

Make sure you have the written records [proof] for the oil change at 7500 miles and 15k and at no more than 180 day intervals from first retail sales.......Nissan is specific that you must comply with your portion of the warranty.......oil filter changes every 180 days or 7.5k which ever occurs sooner!
Even if it sat on a lot [or inside a body shop getting rebuilt] for an entire year it still needed 2 oil changes during that period to comply.

Thanks
My Son and I did the spacer and z-tube, had a muffler shop do the cats. The tapping occurs with the engine running, does not appear to get worse or louder when revving the engine. Loudness appears to fluctuate at idle.
I have told my Son, so much for the fun, we need to take the mods off and have Infiniti take a look at it.

The car is low mileage as the previous owner is military and was deployed 18 months. Husband drove the car while she was deployed, but preferred his truck. I do have records of the previous oil changes and last week had Infiniti do the 15k maintenace ($360).

Just ask for Mark & maybe it is not soooo bad... It can be several things
Are you sure the noise wasn't there before? The tick/tap sounds like the fuel injectors which are very loud on these cars. Take a long screwdriver and place one end on the injector housing and the other end against your ear. If the tapping is heard loudly through the screwdriver then you've got nothing to worry about.
I have a tapping coming form my engine after I installed my crawford it is the valves. I was told that you can really hear them now. I have noticed that a lot of people report this problem after a spacer and a plenum.
Mine is starting to tap too. I just added HFCs and I believe they are the problem. They reduce the back pressure and releaving back pressure can strain the exhaust valves. I don't know if you have replaced your cats but I think that is whats causing mine to tap. The only thing I can think of doing is getting the car tuned for the mods, this should counter act it.
