First Oil Change

I have 1200 miles on my 06 G35x and was thinking I was going to change my oil. It is ok to go to the Castrol German synthetic at 1200 miles, or should I stick with dino oils a little longer?

why don't u let the dealer change it so they could keep records just incase any warranty work has to be done.

I personally would put GTX or comparable dino in for at least the first oil change. My plan is to change over at 9k which would be my fourth oil/filter change. I also change it myself and just file the receipts and mileage/date in case any warranty issues ever surface.

I don't have any data to back this up but I have read several places it is better to wait until 10-15k before switching to synthetic. Something about the engine breaking in better with dino oil.

the only benefit to using petrol based lube during the first 10 - 15k miles is cost (ofcourse the typical benefits of synthetic lube are there too).

When the engine is new it will be producing much higher levels of wear debris vs when it is broken in. As a result of this, frequent (3750 or even more frequent) drain intervals are recommended when the engine is breaking in. You can figure that it is much cheaper to use petrol-based lube vs synthetic based lube during this period. When you can safely extend your drains, that is when you will get the maximum benefit of a synthetic oil. Ofcourse, if you have money to burn, go with synthetic from day 1.

As a side note, the oil filter will always be good for its recommended interval, regardless of break-in or not. So when you change that factory fill after 100 or 1000 miles, keep in mind the filter doesn't need to be swapped out.. yet.

Myself, I put in synthetic after 100 hard (lots of high load, keeping it under 4k rpm) San Francisco city miles w/ my gf as the co-pilot... make that ex gf So far I've had great oil analysis results and my VQ35DE doesn't use any oil after 30k of normal and some spirited driving.

I am not concerned with the cost, but maybe I will do this first change with dino oil and the next with synthetic. I don't think changing you own oil will void the warranty as long as you keep records. The owners manual even describes the procedure for changing your own oil. I really don't see the point in paying the dealer 40 or 50 bucks for what I can do myslef in 10 minutes with better parts. They use crappy Nissan filters and bulk oil. Rather spend the time and use bottled oil and a decent filter.

I going t be changing over to full synthetic not until I reach 15K. I am currently running Castol GTX Synthetic Blend until then. Than going either Moblie1 or Amsoil.

Do you know what's a good filter for oil change? I'm looking into either the Nissan or Infiniti OEM for my first oil change. I wonder if Mobil-1 is good as well..

From what I gather the OEM filter is junk. I am either going to use the Mobil 1 or K&N...both seem like very good products.

Do not change to Synthetic until your car is fully broken in. If you want that extra protection use a can of BG MOA at every oil change. This is a great additive you can use that prevents sludge, keeps valves and lifters clean, in addition to fortifying your existing oil. I used BG MOA until I hit 10K mi and changed to synthetic. My car does not burn any oil and runs great. I use Moble-1 & a moble-1 filter and change it every 4-5K mi. OR 4-5 months [whatever comes first]. You can also put a can of Chevron Textron 20 Gallon gas treatment in every 3 months. This will keep Carbon from building up & once every 6 moths put a can of dry gas in. Good luck and enjoy you car!!!
