Amsoil question

Thinking of going with Amsoil since I hear from the board its
quite good, they have 3 to choose from, all are 5w30 which is
what I want. Just wonder what is best for our cars 7,500, 15,000 or 25,000 intervals, I don't mind spending a little more
$ to keep our mini V8's running smooth.

Re: Amsoil question

The dealership told me to go 7500 miles on it but I am going to send it out to have it tested around the 7000 mile mark to see how it looks and make a decision from there. I just hate going to the dealership all of the time is my problem. Right now I am at 2000miles on my first AMSOIL change.

Re: Amsoil question

im using the amsoil 0w30 and the sdf-13 filter here in southern california and it has been great. I am on my 2nd change and have about 11,500 miles on my coupe. I got the last change after about 7500 miles had passed and the oil was really clean at that point. Probably could have gone another 3-4 grand before the change. Im still going to change it every 7500 miles though. Just makes me feel better..

To clarify:

I had the standard oil in for the first 3000 miles, then switched to amsoil 0w30 for the next 7500 miles. Now i have about 1000 miles on my most recent change with the 0w30.

I am on my 3rd amsoil fillup. I only do about 5000 miles on it. I also use the K&N ail filter.

Did you have your oil analysed? Although Amsoil has a reputation of holding up very well, the only way you can know if it was good for another 3-4000 more miles, was to have it analysed.

For example, through oil analyses I've had done, Mobil1 5W30 does not seem to match up very well with the VQ, 7500 miles seems to be stretching the oil drain interval. But on my wife's Sequoia, the oil lab suggests I try extending the interval out to 9,000, again based upon an analysis performed at 7500 miles...same Mobil1 5W30.

With that said, I am considering Amsoil's 5W30; which formulation are you utilizing? I'm thinking of the XL 7500 with a 7500 mile ODI, or the ASL with a six month ODI (approx 12-13K miles, oil filter change every 3 months). Of course I'll be utilizing my new hobby of oil analysis to support whichever route I choose.

Re: Amsoil question

gboy... This is a question for www.bobistheoilguy.com

You'll find them very helpful, just pose your question on their boards and you'll get a flurry of helpful responses. Since I'm considering the Amsoil route as well, once I become familiar with Amsoil's product line, I'll be asking the oilheads at BITOG for recommendations before long.

Re: Amsoil question

Man, I love this site, just hope the site is around forever because thats how long I will keep my G I'm in Canada
and the dealers here in Montreal anyway know %$#& about
oil, I asked one garage and he never heard of Amsoil, they use Castrol and I asked about Mobile One and he said thats
OK too, they seems quite persistent in telling me to get the oil
changed every 6000 kilometres or I'm guessing every 4000 miles (US). Well I will go with the Amsoil XL7500 anf have it changed every 6000 miles or 10,000 kilometres.

Thanks guys

Re: Amsoil question

Don't go with XL-7500. It is AMSOIL's inferior synthetic. Go with their best synthetic(pictured). And I would always go with AMSOIL oil filters. They are the best. Dont' take my word for it though. I really encourage you to call AMSOIL and talk to their techs. They are very good and will give you very good info. And get PI it is great! I notcied a difference almost immediately when I first put it in which I couldn't believe and on a relatively new car. And I put one ounce in every 10 gallons of gas I put in to keep the injectors clean. It's supposed to be really safe, no alcohol. I also replaced the tranny fluid with Series 2000 Synthetic Gear Lube 75W-90 for my MANUAL tranny. If you have an AUTOMATIC you are on your own on that because you don't want to mess up putting the wrong thing in an automatic. I do think there is somewhat better shifting but I do know that my trans is well protected in any case. One thing that I hate about AMSOIL products is that my car is so quiet now, I am really missing the noise. But my car is so smooth.

Re: Amsoil question

This is the gear lube that I use, and I was advised over the phone by an AMSOIL tech to use this as well. Call them.

Re: Amsoil question

Defineately get your oil analyzed before extending change intervals. I think the oil is holding up better than the engines and lots of silica and copper are showing up early on. I'm using the Amsoil 2000 series 0w-30 with regular change intervals until my contaminant levels come down (testing every change).

Re: Amsoil question

Hey Jim, don't be shy... post those analysis results. Although there's just a handful of us on board performing analyses, it's starting to open up pretty good discussions.

Re: Amsoil question

hey jb how did you like the 0-30? Right now I'm using Castro Syntec and heard it actually has no synthetic in it at all.

So now i'm about to become an amsoil dealer and order some cases for my family.

Re: Amsoil question

Syntec uses what they call "hydrocracked" carbons. They start with old dino oil and super-refine it to the point where it's close, but not quite, truely as good as synthetic. Better than the cheap stuff, but not worth the price you have to pay for it, seems to be what I get from reading about it. Mobil 1 seems to be the best inexpensive synthetic, if you don't want to step up to Amsoil.
