Horsepower Rating

I was reading socalmmr post on horsepower increase with the filter change. What I don't understand is why are these reading are not closer to the 280hp rating.

Re: Horsepower Rating

Plus these are Wheel Horsepower figures, the 280 is at the Flywheel, so there are drivetrain losses.

Re: Horsepower Rating

Do all car figure it at the fly wheel. I can't understand how the BMW 330ci only has 225hp and still matches the G35c from 0 to 60mph

Re: Horsepower Rating

All manufacturers figure at the flywheel, the 330Ci has those figures because they are a little lighter, plus you have to ask if they tested an automatic or 5/6 speed stick shift, you always lose a couple seconds with an automatic.

Re: Horsepower Rating

BMW engines do seem a little underrated because they are rated with all their accessories on, the engine is probably closer to 235/240 in "Nissan" terms. Weight has something to do with it, but the coupe will pull ahead past 60.

Re: Horsepower Rating

Plus, BMW is really good about picking the right gear ratios for each engine/transmission/drivetrain setup.

Re: Horsepower Rating

In-line sixes tend to be a little smoother and seem to "wind up" faster as well.
