air filter is very very dirty... is this normal?

Hey guys. My car has ~13300 miles on it. The other day I was detialing my car when I decided to take a look at the air filter. I took apart the clips, and got it out to find dirt, soil, grass and a cigarette butt in there . I'm going to pick up a new one tomm, but this doesn't seem normal to me!

The dirt that I tapped off the filter...

Imagine if you had used an inferior filter that would be in your oil.

It's normal. But it depends on where you live. Considering the air intake has scoops that channel cold air right into the box, yes, you will get that kind of stuff.

Damn...thats super dirty! You should change your filter every 12k from what I have heard. From the looks of it I'd say you were using the G as a lawn mower...j/k. Try to get an aftermarket filter such as a K&N or STP.

cigarette butts/soil/grass/cows/glass of water are not normal to be found in air filters, whatever it is, i think someone played a prank or something

I think it's normal, i changed my air filter not too long ago(at 60k) and found a good amount of mud/soil around the cabin/housing. Pretty scary stuff if that sh*t gets into the engine.

Too Dirty Dude............!

How dirty your filter gets depends on your enviroment........where you drive
and under what conditions. From what I see you should clean your filter
every time you change your oil. My son-in-laws K&N filter in his G was
almost that dirty when I took it out.....threw it on the floor in my garage
and asked him how his car was running. I think he had like 20K miles before
I cleaned it for him....seems he's more concerned how his car looks rather
than how it runs. With the cost of gas today I'd think keeping the airfilter
clean would be a priority along with tire pressure....but that's just me!

Thanks for the replies. It was my first time checking it out. I live in socal, and I drive the car pretty hard, so that might be the reason. Where is the cabin filter located? Ill take a look at that too. Also, do I need to change it or just clean the cabin filter?

If your cabin filter is dirty definately change it. The cabin filter is behind your glove box, it takes about 5-10 minutes to get it out. I'm sure there is a DIY on it somewhere here. Definately take a look, it's worth it.
