Poor gas consumption on my G35
Poor gas consumption on my G35
Hello everyone, I enjoy reading your posts and all the informative experiences on each one's g35. I just received my g35 two weeks ago (Twilight Blue with Premium Package and Graphite). The car runs beautifully and is really all that I expected it to be. At my second fill up, I did a rough calculation of the car's consumption, and was somewhat surprised to see the high level of consumption. I had preset the trip odometer to 0 at my previous fill up, and registered 208 kilometers (130 miles) before filling up with 40.1 liters of premium 91 octane (roughly 10.5 US gallons). This works out to 5.2 kilometers to each liter (roughly 12.3 miles per US gallon) city driving. I understand that the g35's consumption may not be the best, however this is quite a bit lower than what I expected. Can this be due to the car being in its break-in period ? I really haven't pushed it since taking possession. Has anybody else calculated their gas milage?
Re: Poor gas consumption on my G35
My 1st fill-up during break-in: 16.5 litres/100km.
2nd fill-up: 14.5
Average in 1st 4 fill-ups: 11.6 litres/100km for the 1st 1600km.
On a long trip for the next 3000km, I averaged 10.4 litres/ 100km.
Overall calculation for the 1st 6000km, averaged 12.1 litres/100km (23.4 MPG or 19.5 Miles per US Gallon)
Hopefully, your 19.2 lit/100km will improve with break-in. Hope this is what you wanted for info.

Re: Poor gas consumption on my G35
Thanks gordgee. Its somewhat reassuring that consumption should improve with time. I believe your 12.1 liters per 100 kilometers is somewhat better than what was listed for average city driving (12.6L/100km - 22mpg) in the g35 sales brochure.

4,500 miles on my G. Started getting > 20 mpg after 3,000 miles. I get between 21 and 24 mpg now.
There was a discussion elsewhere about a 'sweet spot' optimum mileage driving speed, which is about 60 mph. At 70 mph, you drop 2-3 mpg. At 80 mph, you drop a total of 5 mpg. Wierd, but true....

On my last tank, I got 16.7 mpg in mostly city driving. I've had the car 4 months and have less than 3,000 miles. Since I've had the car, I've averaged 14.9 mpg, but the trend has been towards 17mpg.
Re: Poor gas consumption on my G35
I have this same issue. I got mine on Tuesday (oct 1) and at half tank i had only gone aprox. 120 miles...

I don't worry about the gas mileage, just enjoying the ride. Didn't buy this car for the gas mileage, bought for the engine etc.....

Old Habits are hard to break: So used to checking fuel consumtion it can take away from the enjoyment of the car.I don't think you can expect much more than about 20mpg(US) while having a little 'fun'. Trouble is the car's not living up to EPA promises. Check out your mileage after break-in. It's good to vary speed a lot and in my opinion a lot of city driving is good during this time. Good luck..... Gsedanman Garnet Fire Sedan

Put this in perspective. In the Sept 2001 Road & Track, in their long term report on the PT Cruiser at 6840 miles, their best reported milage was 24.9. Worst was 16.9. Average seen 20-22 miles per gallon.
What would you rather drive, a dressed up Neon or your G35? The G's milage is actually quite good for a big six, especially considering performance. Drive it, enjoy it, and don't obsess.

Re: Poor gas consumption on my G35
I'm not really concerned with the fuel comsumption of the g35, if it eventually gets to be between 22 to 24 mpg which is rather good for a 3.5 liter V6. I really bought this car for its good looks, and for the fact that its a fun car to drive. I'd be more concerned if it remains below 18 mpg as this could be an indication of an engine running inefficiently. So far, your responses would indicate that consumption improves as the car approaches 6,000 miles which reassures me.

Re: Poor gas consumption on my G35
I'm at the 11,000 mile range now and my fuel economy (21-22mpg) varies little in the 65-80mph range. I realize that this is a sports-car and I shouldn't worry about the fuel economy.
But chew on this: my 2002 I35 with the same engine and higher coefficient of drag gets a realistic 24-26 mpg. Getting 5 more horsepower (G35 vs. I35) shouldn't have to cost 5 mpg.
