I would never drive a car with the oil light on. It may be just a bad sending unit or electrical glitch, but the consequences are too serious to risk it. If the car is still warranted, then call the dealer. They may want to tow it in, maybe not, either way get it in writing if they ask you to drive it to them. Regardless, DO NOT tell them you have been driving it like that! Tell them it came on right by your house and you have not driven it since.
You may have something blocking the oil pickup or its sludged out and takes a while to warm up and allow oil to pass. Either way, not good. Have you done the proper oil change services? Are you the original owner?

Any noise upon startup (rattles, knocking etc)? If not, then you probably have oil pressure and its an electrical issue. As long as you are sure you have enough on the dipstick and its not making any noise, let it warm up before driving, take it in and have them check the oil pressure and the sending unit.
