Suggestions - $1000 to spend

Guys,

So I just sold my HKS, but I'm trying to figure out what I want to do next. I put the stock exhaust back on, and I think I'm going to leave that on there for now.

I've been reading all these forums for a while as well, and can't decide what I should do. Seems like I should get a z-tube, mrev2, 5/16 spacer, intake, but have no clue what each one does or if there are any consequences for installing them.

I am looking for good ways to spend approximately $1000, and get some good gains in hp or tq, sound a little more aggressive, etc.

So what do u guys think?

That sounds like a great setup. The MREV2 + 5/16" spacers + z-tube will give you some nice gains and will leave you with a little money left over.

So how does this sound:

Z Tube
JWT Popcharger
MREV2
5/16 ISO Spacer

What are the effects of adding these, and is this a good way to go?

hmmm... you are in the right area - it's free to learn... none of us have "the right answer"... you don’t really want one of us to tell you what to spend $1000 on do you?

If you knew me you'd know I'd give good info - but you don’t... the other guy might say something different..

This post is for anyone researching.

There is so much valuable information here and on my350Z that until you start making decision on what you intend to do you will never get a response that you should pay attention to.

Read, read, read, study, learn... then when you have an idea of what you think might work ask specific questions...

I agree with everything you said. I have been reading, and that's how I picked those mods. If I installed all those along with maybe the FI exhaust, would I need a tune or an ECU reset?

Okay I'm getting a little confused. Is the Z-tube considered a cold air intake?

So I'm getting the mrev2 and the iso 5/16 spacer, but now I'm re-thinking the JWT Popcharger and Ztube.....What other options are there that you may recommend?

The z-tube is exactly how it sounds. A tube. The popcharger and z-tube are the best combination imo, considering no matter what intake you get you will NOT get any noticeable performance, and some may even decrease performance. The popcharger is just the air filter, where the z-tube is a plastic tube from a Nissan 350Z. It just sounds better than the stock air intake. Please don't think you will get any performance, its all about the sound. The z-tube and popcharger IMO make the loudest sound increase. It is awesome.

the Z tube is the intake tube from the 350Z... works well on Gs... the reason most change to Z-Tube from OEM intake tube is the OEM has baffling to keep it quiet (it has been debated that is helps velocity, I don’t view it that way)… the problem is it also impedes the air flow a bit – the Z-Tube is just a straight tube (other than the bit of accordion flex in the front for installation).

Cold Air Intake is basically a shielded intake that draws the colder air from outside the vehicle (normally through the grille, but I've seen some tucked into the fender well with vents cut in the fender)... a common and good choice (IMO) is Stillen... however I noticed they are no longer calling theirs "cold air", they call "hi performance" intake.

The biggest problem with the JWT kit is the heat shield is just a metal panel that is basically a barrier to the engine heat - just a partition if you will... the cone filter he uses is good and lots of people have it - many have found combining it with the Stillen heat shield works well.

I use the Stillen kit - their heat shield and filter. Both the Stillen and JWT have a velocity ring too that helps smooth out the intake air and create higher flow.

The Z tube is a good choice not matter what intake you choose.

Hope that helps...

Edit: oops I was writing this as the one above me was posted... so it's all reiterated

Thank you both for your information. So would this setup work:

Fast Intentions Intimidator Exhaust
MREV2
5/16 ISO Spacer
Stillen CAI
Z-Tube

This would mean, that a pop-charger would be useless right? Or am I just confused.

The above setup should give me some good gains, and great sound right?

IMO those are all good choices... and correct, if you go with Stillen the pop-charger isn't needed... If you use pop-charger, the Stillen isn't needed. You should definitively see some gains with he set up... it is highly advisable to have your ECU tuned... that's a different topic (I've always gone to Techno Square).

Okay I've kept reading about this ECU tuned thing, but honestly I have no idea what that means. I don't live in CA, so going to technosquare can be hard.

Would I just have to go to a performance shop, and tell them something? A little confused. I know I can reset the ECU myself, but I doubt that will help.

resetting the ECU will help... reflashing (re-mapping) the ECU just changes the air fuel ration (the amount of air and fuel mixture for combustion)... the more air you have, the more fuel you need to add as to not run lean... adding more air a fuel gives better combustion and better performance... Techno Square also raises the rev limiter, omits the speed limiter (which won’t matter) installs a new drive by wire software for better throttle response... and allows the throttle plate to open 100% at full throttle (instead if the 80% or whatever the OEM setting is for "safety sake"...

There are several units on the market now that a knowledgeable tuner can use to make necessary changes to the ECU - I always use TS so I really can’t give viable info on the other various tuning options. If you do decide on TS you can ship them your ECU, they will program it and send it back.

You can get more info on their website: www.technosquareinc.com

Good luck.

Will adding the pop charger and Z tube create any trouble at a dealership for warranty work? How about Aftermarket Cat backs or Hi-flow Cats. I live in CA and emissions is a B****
