When dipstick reads low, how many quarts are gone?

Im taking my car in for a consumption test, it was really low last time i changed it and I had added a quart last time in between changes! I was wondering, has anyone measured how many quarts down the from 5 quarts is a low reading ("L" on the dipstick)? Any exact measurements would be helpful, thanks.

BTW, whats considered burning oil on a consumption test? I read a fellow members post saying his dealship said 1.5 quarts burned in 3350 miles. Hopeful my engine will be replaced

I believe that the "L" indicates 1 quart low/down.

+1 - I think if you're still showing on the dipstick, you are only 1 quart low.

Burning 1 quart per interval in considered normal by the manual.

It clearly states that 1 quart might be used during intervals... but nothing more.

29,000 miles on my '05 and I have added 3 qt. in 3,000 miles just to stay in the proper range on the dipstick. I'll be heading in to the dealer ASAP to get this resolved. 3qt. in 3,000 miles is absurd.

Ok - so 1qt is completely normal AND EXPECTED for a normal service interval. The low side of the stick correlates to 1qt loss.

If you loose 1qt in less than 1000 miles - you'll get anew motor. This is MOST common in MT coupes. AT's have the issue as well - but it's almost 4:1 for the MT's over the coupes.
