Re: Knocking and Pinging

outdoorsr,

Gas quality is a good starting place for troubleshooting the problem. Have you tried octane booster? Some other potential causes might include the cam sensors, the crank sensor, out of spec timing, a len air/fuel condition or an unidentified ECU input/output problem.

Re: Knocking and Pinging

Have not tried anything else yet. Any idea if these issues will show up on a computer diag event log of some type? I hope so, in order to prove what I am hearing. I switched to Sunoco 94 for a tank or 2 to see.

I am going to have the car in the shop soon to look at my brakes also, and fix any TSB's on it. Really aggravating though.

Re: Knocking and Pinging

I have a favor to ask. Can you guys listen intently to your cars some - from 2000 to 4000 RPM. Especially at 3950 exactly. I really hear tons of pinging and am not sure where it is coming from. The dealer says "Sorry, can't duplicate it."

I drove a loaner auto and it was more responsive and peppier than my stick. I only have 13k on it too.

Thanks is advance.

Re: Knocking and Pinging

This is almost too long winded an answer to do here but I'll give you the condensed version.
The engines timing settings are based on the reccomended octane rating for your vehicle. If it says use 91+ and you use a lower octane rated fuel the engine will not perform as rated. Problems with accelerated engine wear will occur as a result of using a lowered octane fuel. There is science envolved here but go with trust me!

Re: Knocking and Pinging

Ok just so everyone knows, gas is not trucked from texas, ships, or other refineries to gas stations. It is first pipelined then trucked to significantly reduce cost. Gas is "deposited" at one end of a pipeline and then "withdrawn" at the other end. There is no way to be sure that mr. shell truck has withdrawn mr. shell gas. Its rated then deposited and the same amount is withdrawn from the other end. The ONLY difference in gas that has been withdrawn and placed in an ARCO truck vs. a SHELL truck is the addatives that they place in the gas as the truck is filled.

Re: Knocking and Pinging

87 octane?!?! Sorry, but if you can't at the very least afford to get 89 octane, you have no business driving the G. Just pay the 10% extra for premium. I've never used anything but premium on any car. Flame away!
