If exhaust is smelled in the cabin, it must be getting out of the car somewhere before it hits the muffler at the rear, where it shouldn't be smelled at all. I think it could be getting out at a leak somewhere and maybe it's getting back into the car through those vents on the bottom sides of the rear.
