If the headers were new, they could have had a coating on them that is burning off. I would think you would hear a leak more than smell it if there were one.

New exhaust parts will have a smell for a while while it burns off.

I can smell the scent of exhaust when I accelerate quickly as well. It's not a burnt smell, though, it's just the smell of exhaust that's shooting through the cat so fast that it's not all being processed. I only smell it when I'm pushing it nearly WOT. And my car is fully stock.

New exhaust parts have a protective coating that will burn off. Drive it fairly hard for a few days, and it should be gone.

Hard driving will also give a slight "rotten egg" smell as the exhaust isn't processed as well through the cats.

Right. But should it make it into the car? I never smelled my own exhaust when I really got on my Maxima. How does it get into the car while I'm driving? As long as you guys experience this too, I'm not to worried, though. Again, I have no new exhaust or anything.

If your air conditioning/fan setting is not set to recirculate then you very well could smell exhaust in your cabin esp when stopped or going slow. However, if you're on the highway and there are no other cars in front of you and you smell exhaust as you decribed when accelerating then I would quess that you may have a small leak at the header.

I have the same thing..exhaust smell inside car (350Z). I am APS TT with built
motor and of course no cats. I FINALLY figured it out. The rear hatch rubber
gasket was leaking and letting exhaust in....but only when the window was
cracked open which created a vacuum and and it was sucked in. My test
was to run electrical tape across the bottom of the hatch and bumper and
that took care of the smell. I know the G35 is different, but just wanted you to
know how strange sh*t happens. Oh yeah, I replaced the seal....NO SMELL

So you only smelled the exhaust when you were stopped?

No, smelled it will driving hard and also when letting off the
gas ONLY when window was open or cracked open.
It seems the fumes must roll up the bumper as that is
the only way they can get inside. The open window
really creates a vacuum inside the car. I know, sounds
crazy, but after the seal change, no more smell. I checked
EVERYTHING else (exhaust, turbos, manifolds, etc) and
never saw any signs of a leak. Hell, it made my clothes
smell if out for a long run if the window was open. Hope this
helps in some way.

I have the same issue. My car is completely stock, and at WOT I can smell the exhaust in the cabin. I love the smell of hauling ***.. but I've never owned a car with this issue.

With headers and any new exhaust that gets installed the metals are burning off any coatings and just getting used to the heat coming through them. Every header install I have done has a "new metal burning" smell for up to a week. Its normal.

Yes, but if the windows are closed the smell shouldn't be leaking into the cabin.

This is my 1st Infiniti and it's the only car I know that has this problem. When it was raining sunday, I had all windows closed, ac was off, no air circulating, the car in front of me was a old muscle car running hella rich and smoking pretty bad. Not sure wth it was but I could smell it from inside the G.

Also, why can't we recirculate the air in the cabin w/o running the AC at the same time?

This is just ridiculous.
