Copper Plenum vs. Normal

Hey. Am considering the 5/16 spacer and have done a considerable amount of reading, but just have one quick questions. I understand that the copper spacer is for climates where it gets cold. I live in Utah so yeah it gets cold. My question is how much does it matter? Does not going with the copper just mean that my HP gains are going to be lower in the winter, or is there some possible damage that can occur by not using the copper?

I would prefer to use the regular spacer as I don't care about gains in the winter too much, and would rather not spend an extra 100.00 on the copper, but don't want to screw something up. Thanks!
