I've been told by several mechanics that the Timing Chains in Nissan engines are good for at least 350K miles. The guides may get noisy but most of them can be removed without causing any problems.

If Any Timing Chain Or Guides Had Or Have To Be Replace That Means There Is A Serious Internal Problem With Your Engine .

yeah I was just concerned with the guides, coming from the KA equipped 240SX its supposed to be done every 60K or 120k miles.

Its not so much a concern now, but a month ago when I was looking at used G's i was curious and the two people I knew with a 350Z had no clue as they had never seen anything about it.

It was just one of those things I wanted to know before buying a car but it turned out it wasnt needed.

the KA24DEs had problems with the timing chain guides, which were optional to remove if they made chatter, the chain itself never needed replacement. I used to own an older altima that had the same motor and problem.

In regards to the timing chains in our engines and the majority of all nissan engines past 1995 they shouldnt need service for the life of the engine.

I've got an '03 5AT with 112k miles. . .no noise chains here, and have never replaced it.

Not sure about other models, but the '89 pickups definitely do.

Amen. This is what happened to my 240SX. Back then, they put in plastic chain guides, it wore out (surprise), the timing belt tension was off and over time it bore through its housing and ended up mixing coolant and oil in the engine causing a rod to go through the block. Friggin' 99 cent piece of plastic destroyed an engine!!!

I can only imagine (hope) that they are all metal now.

Let me amend this: if there is a problem with your guide, there will be a serious problem with your engine eventually.

the chain would be replaced if the timing had to be set over and over...but the odds of that are pretty low

Eventally the chain will stretch enough to get the cam vs crank relationship out a few degrees but this usually increases high rpm power at the expense of idle smoothness.
