White Smoke, Tapping Noise and Sludge

Got a quick question?

I have an 03 5AT sedan with 112k miles on it. I have been using synthetic oil in the car since I got it. One day I was driving and noticed a louder tapping noise coming from the engine. After a few more days driving on it, there is white smoke coming out the exhaust every time i accelerate from a stand still. When I pop the hood and have someone step on the gas pedal it sounds like a stuck air valve shaking around.

I did my research on the site and came up with the following possible causes.

Bad EGR valve
Possible bent exhaust valve
possible head-gasket leak

I checked my coolant and oil level and they are what they are supposed to be. One thing that puzzled me a little was a gray residue on the end of the dip stick. It came right off when I wiped it.

Can someone help, I want to take the car to a shop and have them inspect it but I want to have an idea of what it could possibly be?

Update,

Checked the dipstick today again and there was a bunch of sludge built up on it. Wiped it down and put the dipstick back in and the oil is just really black.

Thanks in advance,

Pete

If you have a bunch of milky fluid on the dip stick, you have a blown head gasket or a cracked block/head.

Pull the "Oil Fill" cap on the engine cover. Look at the inside of the cap, if it's all milky, you got big trouble.

I'll check the cap when I get home today. I was hoping it would not be the head gasket.

If by any chance it is the gasket would it be cheaper to get the engine rebuilt or just do a swap?

Checked the oil when I got home and it was low. About two quarts low. After I added the oil I started the car and it is now hesitating. It's shaking a little. Also the white smoke out the exhaust smells almost like pure gas. The tail pipe is almost pure black from the smoke.

Unfortunately there is no check engine light on (yet). I think I'll play it safe and take it to a nearby shop to have them take a look at it.

FYI I had one injector replaced on the engine before since it went bad.

Any other suggestions?

Sounds bad. real bad. i would agree on the blown head gasket or if an injector got stuck it can wash out the ring in a cylinder causing gas to get in the oil as well. not common but it does happen. smell the oil to see if it smells like fuel. Good luck man that sucks.

I dropped the car off at ATM in Bergenfield yesterday for a leak down and compression test. Waiting for the verdict this morning, I hope is not the head gasket.

Doesn't sound good bro. Sounds like the head gasket is gone. But keep us updated. Good luck with your repairs.

Got a call from the shop an they told me that the rings on three cylinders are no good. I ordered a new motor today and will have them do the swap next week.
