Ignition Start Button (Keyless)

I don't know if you guys have seen this yet, but apparently there is a fashion trend in the aftermarket mod world aimed at starting your car with the push of a button. Yup, no more keys. Take a look at this link that talks about the parts and install as well as a couple of pics of a button installed to start an RX-8.

Think this would be cool for our G's?? I would question the security side of it though....

Just some food for thought.....

Nearly $300 for that mod seems worthless to me. You still are required to insert a key and turn it to the "ON" position. I guess it is nice if you are into that sort of thing, but the only way I would flip for that type of mod would be if it was set up like some Mercedes where your key card recognizes you have entered your vehicle and you are able to depress the start button without inserting a key into the vehicle.

Re: Ignition Start Button (Keyless)

That seems like a waste... if it was like the Keylessgo on a Benz then that would be sweet. Lets see turn the key then press a button?!!
I think Lexus has a system like the Mercedes in the new LS series.
Edited by lorinserbenz on 05/28/04 11:51 AM.

Re: Ignition Start Button (Keyless)

I didn't read that post at all, but $300??????

You can buy a remote start system for (at most) $150. Buy a $50 transponder bypass and a $1 switch. As long as your remote start has an activation input you'll be able to start the car at anytime by pressing a button. This way you'll save yourself $100 and be able to not only start your car with a pushbutton but also start it remotely. Just my thoughts...

Re: Ignition Start Button (Keyless)

hahaha that rediculous. When I was in highschool I bought and installed a remote start for my VW Corrado and got it for $50 bucks shipped to my door. Spent three four hours deciphering the wiring and 30 mins just soldering it in and bamm remote start for the cold morings. I was living in Santa Cruz at the time and it was nice to leave the heater in the on position the night before, then just go to my window in my apaprtment start the car and let it heat up then walk out to it already warmed up. Worked great for the hot days, just left the ac on for the summer. I think its a great mod for those who live in very cold or hot areas. But other than for that reason, its a total waste of time.

Re: Ignition Start Button (Keyless)

As far as the 'chip' goes they arn't that bad. You need a transoner bypass system that is basically a little box that you permanently mount a key into. Everytime the remote start cycles starts it energizes the key in the box and sends the signal to the stearing column so the car can start. They work very good. The hardest part of this alarm is the door locks. You have to run wires into the doors, and to do that you have to get through two waterproof plugs (one on the door and one on the car side). You can pop the plugs out and drill holes through them I have heard, but space is very tight.

Other then that the car is fairly straight forward. Be careful cuz the interior scratches real easy.

Re: Ignition Start Button (Keyless)

I know a lot of people get this to just warm their car up on cold winter mornings. But it only stays on for a limited time and shuts off again after a few minutes. Which is why you need the key to actually drive off with it.

What's wrong with sticking your key in, depressing the clutch, and then hearing the growl of the car?

Re: Ignition Start Button (Keyless)

perhaps the 2k5 G will have the I-key (pocket key) a la the FX and Q of present......

this system, IMO, is much better than the mercedes setup.... i never took the transponder outtamy pocket/briefcase once while owning my fx..... very convient!

Re: Ignition Start Button (Keyless)

I think remote starts are far too complicated to be covered in a DIY. There are just too many variables and unknowns. Some things should be left up to professionals, IMO.

I can just see all the posts now - "I followed the DYI and now my car won'g start, what should I do?" "I installed my remote start following the DYI but...."

Sometimes too much info can be a bad thing!

Don't get me wrong, I'm not against people installing things themselves, and I am usually the first one to give advice and help when people post encountered alarm problems on the boards, I just feel that if someone is knowledgable enough to install a remote start system on this car then they won't need a DIY to do it!

On a sidenote, I believe there is a DIY on g35frenzy.com from some guy who installed a remote start, and did a fairly descent job considering it was his first one.
