Service Engine Soon Light

I have a 2004 G35 Sedan with 82,000 km. A while back, my "service engine soon" light came on. So I checked my manual and it said to tighten the gas cap. So I did it and the light went away.
Earlier this week, the light came back on so I checked the gas cap and it was tight, I also made sure the gas tank was full. The light has not gone away.
Has anyone else experienced this? I called the dealership and they are charging $100.00 just to hook the car to the computer. I thought this was quite expensive as it takes less than 5 minutes to hook the car up.
I'm worried that there is a bigger problem with the car!
Thanks

Go to any local parts store and they can read the code for you.

Since every car made [sold in EU and US] since 1996 has used the same OBDII system........it would be useful for every owner to have an inexpensive personal scanner [$~100] and a digital copy of the FSM to look up each code and how to follow the subsequent step by step procedure to verify and repair.................just as the dealer techs do.

With both you can decide what might be do it yourself and what requires expert technical help.
Remember Parts and labor cost are roughly equal items of the average repair ticket.

You don't need to buy a scanner. Go to autozone and they'll scan it for free. Tell us what the code is.
