It wasn't about ownage. I just like to make sure the facts are out and correct.

I do agree about the premium fuel. If the manufacturer recommends it there's a reason for it.

follow up

Thanks to everyone who contributed. I finally drove out the last of the 87 this past Friday and refilled it with premium. I was easy on it until this morning and it runs great. I followed the advice to keep it under 35k and it never pinged.
Gas mileage difference? 15.7mpg with regular vs 19.5-22 premium.

Have a great New Year’s!

Wow. That's significant.

For that much of a difference to occur the ECU had to of pulled out a lot of timing. The engine was probably experiencing inaudible knock and the ECU reacted accordingly.

Hydrazine, I completely agree. I've noticed it isn't reacting quite like it did before and I think I may just cut the battery for awhile. I've been driving it like I did previous to this and I'm not getting the same mileage i did. (right around 19, but i admit i've been pretty happy to have it "back")
I don't know... I've searched and read the +/- of a reset. (and even that it doesn't "really" reset anything. (?))
I'm open to advice if anyone has any to share.

Cheers & a happy new year's to you all!

Yesterday, I was running low on gas on my way to my buddy's house. I stopped by a ma and pop store and put only 3 gallons of "premium" gas in it. When I got to my buddy's house and pulled out of his driveway, my engine started sputtering in drive. When I put it in neutral or park and rev'd the engine up, it idled fine.

I think I got some bad gas at that freaking store. I made it to my normal gas store and filled her up with premium. The engine is still sputtering a little when I drive it but it's not as bad. My service light is still on. I'm wondering if it'll clear itself up after this tank of gas. I'm not pushing the throttle hard in the meantime.

isn't the VQ prone to pining whether you use 1000000000242132 octane or 91 anyways..

Dude that's a different engine... If it was made in the same plant I would agree but it isn't it's made in a different country!

The Maximas DO recommend premium gas. It says that in the inside of the tank door. But it is not needed!

OP put some injector cleaner in there, cleans anything that might have built up from sub par gas.

4DGS, what brand would you recommend? I figure on going to Autozone. They have Lucas Oil, Valvoline, STP, Chevron?

my girl took my ride one day and ended up putting half a tank of 87 ..

didnt know any better cuz thats what she uses in her car and its cheaper .

but the next day i took the car to work ..and automatically felt a difference .

i called her and almost accused her of driving crazy in it .

till she said i only went to run errands and even put gas in your car ..

i asked what she put she said "gas duhhh" .. lolol

i asked which one and at what station ..

she stopped by the no name brand gas stations and put the cheapest gas ..

automatically i knew that was the problem ..

i cant say i drove it hard enouph to hear a knock but it deffinetly felt like crap ..

i let it get down to under a 1/4 tank and filled up sunoco 93 ..

which is what i filler up with since ive gotten her ..

wooo it felt a hell of alot better ...

although my findings were not scientific. i definetly knew something was up with the car ..

=)

I just took my car out for a long drive to use up some of the gas. It seemed to drive fine going 55-60mph. What I'm feeling now is that when I hit a stoplight after driving at that speed, the engine is slightly sputtering. So what I'm doing for now is shifting it to Neutral. I can hear the engine trying to adjust itself and it idles properly a few seconds later. Then it drives fine when I shift it back into Drive.

Update... just got back from AutoZone and the engine code was returning a cylinder misfire. I opted to get Lucas octane booster instead and only put a small amount in the tank. We'll see if that clears this tank up.
