CAI engine water damage

Anybody with a CAI ever have any trouble with it sucking water into the engine? People say that the CAI does this, but I haven't heard this actually happening to anybody. Please tell if this has happened to you.

Re: CAI engine water damage

You have to dip/dunk/submerge the intake into deep standing water long enough to suck a column of water all the way up into your engine. That's not easy to do, especially if you are making a real effort to avoid doing that. If your intake does get submerged, it's going to suck in water, and when that column of water hits your cylinder(s), stuff is going to deflect, bend, and/or break. Water just does not compress as easily as air... And, no, I've never personally known anybody who had that happen. But I've heard stories.

If I remember correctly, one of our members from HI hydro-locked his engine. Can't remember who, where, or exactly when however.

Re: CAI engine water damage

O...thats why....you should have the by-pass valve coz it'll stop the water from entering the intake to the machine

Re: CAI engine water damage

I've seen by-pass valves on the AEM CAI and on the K&N CAI, but I don't thin they have one for the Injen CAI. Not sure though.

Re: CAI engine water damage

You could use the AEM Bypass Just Have to cut the INjen and insert the Bypass in an Approiate spot............I have the Injen RD #19992 and have Yet to do this mod.. Then again I live in SO CAL So it rarely rains But when it does SO Far I've avoided any Large Flooded intersections......

Re: CAI engine water damage

The guy that hydrolocked his engine had a stock intake. He was in some really deep water I guess.

Re: CAI engine water damage

Your car has to be stranded in a flood water before your cai sucks the water into the engine!!! I had cai on my Acura CLs and the intake is behind the bumper. Even then I never had any problem. With the high location of the G intake, I just don't see how the cai will suck in water unless you drive it into a pond or river. By then, you have more worries than just your engine. You don't need bypass valve with the G, besides, these valves are made with cheap foam material but the mfg charge you an arm for it. These valves usually don't last long either. In the CL forum, serveral people complained about the broken valve, sucking in air after the filter, which is even worse than without it.

Re: CAI engine water damage

Never had any problems with that yet, and its been raining here for like a month strait almost! Guy with the red coupe who hydro locked said he drove fast through a puddle about 2 feet deep! Again, you would have to submerge the filter to have a problem. I was a bit scared at first but don't worry about it now.

Re: CAI engine water damage

Some of the 350z's have the CAI filter sticking out in plain view right behind the grill. The filter would get soaked in the rain.
