Torque Wrench Suggestions

Looking to buy some tools to work on my G. A friend suggested getting a torque wrench to help me with oil changes. Wondering if any of the gear heads here can give me some advice on getting one. What torque rating wrench should I purchase? Any good brands? Good places to buy? I'm also looking for a filter wrench attachment, but hard to find the size that fits our OEM filters.

Thanks!

Re: Torque Wrench Suggestions

0-80 foot lb is a good starting torque wrench. Buy quality, craftsman at a minimum, snap on is better. Enjoy

down the road you may want to invest in a 0-250 ft lb torque wrench as well and possibly a inch lb (small) torque wrench.

I use my 0-80 for just about everything, my 0-250 for suspension parts and lugs, and my little torque wrench (0-30 inch lbs ) for nothing really.

Your oil filter should only be on hand tight, after the first oil change you shouldn't need a filter wrench. The suggested way to install a oil filter is to lube the o ring with new oil, then thread it on until it is flush. then turn it 1/4 to 1/2 turn past that point. As long as it is on a new car it shouldn't leak like this. Mine neve have

I don't really think you'll need a torque wrench to change the oil. Good advice from 3.5SE.

I got a 50-250 snap on and it's great. I use it for suspension pieces and torquing the lugs. (I'll have 3 sets of wheels pretty soon so it'll save me a lot of $)

Whatever one you get either for oil changes or changing wheels, make sure that you get it calibrated on a yearly basis more or less, which will depend on how much you use it.

Re: Torque Wrench Suggestions

I've got a MAC that goes from 50 to 250 ft-lbs, it has a plastic/rubberized cushion handle. that thing is great no fatigue on your hands, it's especially helpful when torquing to high specs since your hand doesn't get sore. I highlly recommend that you get one with a comfort grip. Although this range is not very usefull, I would recommend one that goes from 20 to 100 ft-lbs, a much more usefull range and it will be smaller so you can get into tight locations better.

Re: Torque Wrench Suggestions

As for the oil filter wrench, get a metal flexible one so it will auto grab the filter tight when you remove it. As suggested earlier, don't use the wrench for tightening.
