bank 1 and 2 running lean?

well a few days ago a check engine light came on..I ran the diagnostic tool to see the error codes it was bank 1 and 2 are running lean..what does this exactly mean and what are possible causes...more over possible fixes? what can happen to the car if it is left unfixed? can it be hazardous in the long run for the car?

banks refer to the different sides of the engine. It's a V-6, so each bank (the left and right banks) contain 3 cylinders. Running lean can be bad for your car, as fuel acts as a coolant in the combustion process. Running lean means that the air/fuel ratio is higher than it should be, so you do not have enough fuel in the mixture. Your engine will run hotter and you risk burning things up, depending on the severity of the leaning issue. I would take to get it looked at.
