Model Years
Model Years
What's up with people posting 2003.5 and 2004.5 as their model years? Are there really cars with stickers on 'em that say that they are .5 years or are people just tryin' to make their car look a bit newer? What VIN ranges do you consider as .5 year models?
Re: Model Years
There were mid-year changes in both 2003 and 2004, so 2003.5 and 2004.5 are correct in some cases.
For the 2004 model year, if your coupe's VIN starts with 800001, it is a 2004.5. For the sedan, the 2004.5's start at E*4M600001 or F*4M700001.
I'm not sure about the 2003.5, hopefully someone else does.

Re: Model Years
A good question. Since I have a 2004.5 G35 Sedan, I've been trying to figure out what changes were made to it. I really haven't found out too much to date, other than the 04.5's incorporate a brake fix / alteration. I've asked my friend [who works for Nissan] to see if he could find out for sure what the exact changes for the 04.5's versus the 04's were. He's pretty busy though, but he'll try to take a look.
Re: Model Years
There were some threads on the 04.5s a few months back. I believe the consensus was that the 04.5s were ULEV2.
Some said the 04.5s have the new AT shifter ****, some said it was before the 04.5s.
I'm sure there are threads around dec-march that answer this question.

Re: Model Years
Woohoo and crapola! I just went out to see what I have, the VIN is ...805XXX, that means that I have a 2004.5 but it also means that I cannot get the TS-ECU upgrade yet.
I was planning on getting that when I went on vacation in about 3-4 weeks. Happy and bumbed at the same time.......
The above statements are only my take on the issue. If you disagree with anything I typed then you are 100% right!

I think I remember hearing there were emissions changes in the 04.5.
Not sure what kind of changes, but changes none the less...

Re: Model Years
There were some pretty noticable changes between the 2003 and 2003.5, the most instantly identifiable being the "doggy door" on the trunk converted to the new single-panel design. You can quickly tell the difference between an 03 and an 03.5, however I'm not so sure about the differences between the 04 and 04.5

Re: Model Years
Another difference between the 03 and 03.5 is you can now open the trunk from the inside, inside the trunk their is a new design to the interior trunk release system and they also added another power outlet.

Re: Model Years
Half model years only really mean something if their are changes that justify a different price. As an example, the 85.5 Porsche 944 had a completely different dash and interior than the 85. Nissan did the same thing when they came out with the original hardbody as a new mid year model. In the price books, there are 2 different listings for the 85 and 85.5 944 with different resale values. For the 03 and 04 G35 coupes, there is only one. Why the mid year center console armrest may cost $300 to update, it is worthless in terms of resale. Offically by the manufacturer there is no mid year model designation and hence neither by the resale.

One very noticeable change was to the auto sedan...
When in manual mode, the tranny will not upshift (1st to 2nd, etc) without driver intervention, although it does d/shift as you slow to a stop.

Re: Model Years
Yes, they changed the MM mode's operation in the '04.5 model. I was freaking out when I picked mine up and drove it home, thinking it had the old style MM mode (which didn't seem right, IMO) but was releaved when I found it had been changed and works the way MM shifting should.
Until the '04.5 change, the MM mode downshifted for you but it still registered (in the dash) whatever gear you had it in last; so, starting from a light or a stop sign, it would shift automatically (unless you manually downshifted all the way to 1st gear) until it hit the last gear you were in (the MM mode)...it was a bit annoying, especially since our '03 FX35's MM mode didn't operate this way. The FX downshifts for you, but it shows you which gear you go down to in the dash, and the MM mode will always start in 1st gear from a dead stop, which makes more sense for MM mode. That's the point of MM mode -- to shift manually from 1st to whichever gear without a clutch. So, the '04.5 G35 5AT model now reflects this change. I still don't understand the Infiniti engineers' thinking on the old MM shifting????
btw - yes, the '04.5 model also has the shifter with the button in front (toward the windshield) like in the FX.
