Re: Kinetix Plenum: Catastrophic failure @ 80mph...

Let me put it this way ~ Most of you claim it's absolutely stupid to drive around with a cracked plenum. Then we all know Kinetix plenums are known to crack for various reasons and there is no guarantee any of the new versions eliminated this issue. So where does that leave us? Add the two together and it's pretty much "It's pretty stupid to drive around with a $400 plenum that is known to crack for various reasons" Imagine what would happen if a piece of cracked plastic were to fall into the engine compartment....... Anyone willing to sacrifice Infiniti 8yr powertran warrantee for 8hp? I don't think so.

Re: Kinetix Plenum: Catastrophic failure @ 80mph...

Generally aftermarket cats are built to inferior standards compared to oem which must function thru the 7 year warranty.

They achieve less back pressure because the honey comb is wider [larger holes] and the amount of catalyst is thinner plated.
These bricks are designed to maybe last 25,000 miles for replacement of failed cats to get an old car thru a single emission test.
Now they are called performance cats........wow great marketing!

Besides it is a federal and most states felony to replace oem cats if they are still functioning......felony tampering.

People will buy anything and these sales prove it!

44 - 61 in-lb is what I meant. I've been too busy designing precision optical mounts with #02 (.086 major dia.) screws and torque specs requiring 46 +/-2 in oz. I had in oz. on the brain, but in. lbs. is correct. Sorry if I mislead anyone...

First time the caveat (spelled correctly) saved me.

Re: Kinetix Plenum: Catastrophic failure @ 80mph...

I think the answer to all of our problems is this. It is supposed to be a lower plenum that provides the extra air flow in the front that we are missing.

If it does what it supposed to do (get more air in) then I think is a better product than the upper plenums that we have to choose from right now. Kinetix cracks and Crawford gets warped from the welding process. Besides, this thing is made from aluminum so to me the $450 is not too much considering we pay $375 for plastic plenum (kinetix) and about $400 for a bastardized original plenum (crawford). The only problem is that it needs more work to be put in.

You mean the worlds most expensive gasket? No thanks.

The answer to all our problems is not the Esprit spacer. It doesn't work correctly and requires lower engine mounts. This has been covered before. The answer is CRAWFORD.

Re: Kinetix Plenum: Catastrophic failure @ 80mph...

Lol. I may be missing the boat completely here. I thought it was the whole lower plenum designed with more height up front. If it's only the gasket then I agree. It is not worth the money.

I think the lower engine mounts are only required for the Z.

I agree with Neffster from various other posts. Someone needs to make a plenum, either cast or milled from aluminum to avoid cracks from the Kinetix and the warpage from Crawford.

Sukairain you're right and wrong. You didnt fully read or understand, what everyone said wass tupid including myself was that he checked his plenum seeing the crack right away anyone would get it checked or replaced, not start modifying it with silicone and rubber cement and [censored] expecially for driving 3 hours and at speeds over 70 mph. Not smart!! But anyway, you guys started bringing up possibilities which are slim to none with a piece falling intot he engine compartment, but anything can happen really and my cars leased. Not a good idea there. Damm i dunno what to do!!!!!!!!!!!!! I need my stock plenum and dont have a lot of money for the crawford because of my test pipe and borla exhaust purchase!!!!!!Helpp me, any 1 wanna lend me money ? =)

Re: Kinetix Plenum: Catastrophic failure @ 80mph...

iLLG35,

If your “sig” is correct, you have a sedan. It was my understanding that sedans benefited greatly from exhaust changes. Your "sig" at the end of your post states, wheels, intake and that your car is lowered... ever consider an exhaust instead of a plenum? Might be the best bet on a leased sedan...

Re: Kinetix Plenum: Catastrophic failure @ 80mph...

Neff yea I ordered it last week the Borla and should have it either tomorrow or friday. I wanted to do the exhaust, test pipes, and plenum all working off of airflow. You think i'll need the plenum?

Re: Kinetix Plenum: Catastrophic failure @ 80mph...

ILLG35, I think you'll want the plenum because it should work well with the other mods you have. The next item might be the TS ECU upgrade and then you'd be set, until you go FI of course...

For those of you reading this, but have not yet bought your first mod and are contemplating joining the crowd be forewarned. Modding is very addictive! If I had more funds available I would have already had a Vortec unit installed, new wheels, exhaust would be installed (not just on order) and I'd be working toward doing something with the stereo by now.

Fortunately I've been able to keep my habit down to about one item per month. If I didn't have kids, 401K's, 529 college plans, 403B's, etc... I'd be driving one tricked out G, that's for sure...

I wouldn't be surprised if we hear about another cracked Kinetix plenum in the next, oh, 12 hours.
