Blind Spot Mirrors

Does anybody here use blind sport mirrors? I just installed mine yesterday (one per rear view mirror). Is it true that the "blind spot" is only on the passenger side?

I installed mine on the lower right corner of the mirror. I've seen 'em installed on different places. Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Re: Blind Spot Mirrors

blind spots are usually on the driver's side...
you cant see a car if its near your driver-side tail-light... try it on the freeway!

Re: Blind Spot Mirrors

Are you talking about the sedan or coupe?
I don't have any problem with blind spots on the sedan with proper setup of the mirrors.

Re: Blind Spot Mirrors

I've got the little circular ones on both sides. Once you get used to driving a car with them you can't live without them. I've even put them on rental cars before.

Re: Blind Spot Mirrors

I have them installed on my car, great if you're racing on the freeway and you need to make quick lane changes - not that I do but if I did I can see how it helps.

Re: Blind Spot Mirrors

I agree, proper angle of the mirrors will eliminate blind spots. I have the sedan and have no blind spots.

Re: Blind Spot Mirrors

you may think you don't have blind spots, but there are! with these blind spot mirrors, you also have a wider angle of view, though small, to the rear of the car. after a while, you get used to jus' glancing at the rear view mirrors to switch lanes instead of doing the "look-over-the-shoulder."

Re: Blind Spot Mirrors

With properly-adjusted mirrors, I think the blind spot is almost nada. I've tested it countless times, and have converted all my friends to "Racing configuration" mirrors. No more over-the-shoulder...

Re: Blind Spot Mirrors

what's a racing configuration mirror. I notice that I have blind spots on my coupe especially the drivers side, I almost changed lanes right into another car twice, scared the **** out of me. I adjust mine so that my car is just out of the line of sight and I need to tilt my head to see it, yet if a car is at just the right spot on the side of me I can't see him. If I angle the mirror out anymore then I can't see behind me and only the side is visible.

Re: Blind Spot Mirrors

GeoBau..
I agree, with proper adjustment there are no blind spots.

Most people have the side views adjusted too tight the the side of the car. My wife drives me nuts with this, she likes to see the side of her car.

FWIW, here's my proceedure
To get you in the ballpark, start with the left side mirror. Lean your head over to the window & now adjust mirror until you just see the side of the car.
To do the right side lean your head to the middle (over the center console), adjust until you just see the right side of the car.
Adjust the rear view normally.

Now the next time out on a multi lane road, make fine adjustments.
For the left side, watch for a car to pass you on the left lane;
Looking out of the rear view watch for it to leave your rear view. You should see it immediately in the left side mirror. Then as the car comes up the left side, as it leaves your left side mirror you should pick it up in your periferal vision.
Fine tune to make this a smooth transition from Rear to Side to Periferal. When set up properly the passing car will not disappear at any time.

Repeat for the right side.

Re: Blind Spot Mirrors

integr8r posted what i was about to post....

in drivers ed they teach u how to do this (i just took it about a year and a half ago haha). It really is righ and works well. My mom was really stuborn about it once when i told her that her mirrors weree "wrong" and she said that differnet people adjust mirrors differently and got pissed. Then one time i told her to just try and use mine (i only cared cause i didnt like driving and having to adjust em everytime i got into her car), and she came back to me after a couple of days and said "OMG i can see so much more!" There is no reason to be able to see the side of your car.... u know where your car is, so adjust the mirrors OUT. I have mine almost as far angled out as they will go. My mom's old ml320, the right side mirror wouldnt go out far enough for me to be comfortable with it. I have NO blindspot at all on the passneger side (remember that that mirror is not the same as the one on the left) "objects are closer than they appear", so u can see better/more out of this one and because the angle isnt as sharp that u are looking at it. I adjust my mirrors so that with my face against the glass, i can barely see a 2mm sliver of my car (drivers side) and when im leaning over the middle console i can see about 2mm on that side. This makes it so that u dont have to turn around if you are just changing one lane. I usually dont have to check my side mirrors to see IF there is a car there because you should look in ur rearview often enough to know whether a car is there or not. I use them more as tools to know when i can cut into traffic or cut someone off and fly past the guy in front of me I do check them before changing lanes tho just to make sure. I drove my friend's firebird one time when she was too drunk to drive (horible visibility in the dark in a soft top convertable) and the side mirrors are tiny and the car is really long. She had those circles and i didnt like them really.... i guess it takes some getting used to and it wasnt that crowded ont he streets so i didnt have to use them really.

Re: Blind Spot Mirrors

Agreed. I've been driving with my mirrors this way for over 20 years. They are finally now teaching it in many driving schools as well. It can take some getting used to if you have driven for years seeing the side of your car in the mirror.

I also agree that some cars do not let the driver's mirror adjust out far enough for this technique.
