Question Ticking sound in dash

I have a weird ticking sound coming from instrument cluster area – or somewhere in the dash above steering column… it’s a rapid ticking under hard acceleration only after intial start up.

I don’t remember seeing or hearing anything about this and didn’t find anything in a quick search… anyone familiar with this?

Is it coming from a roughly circular gauge with two unequal-length needles pointing to various numbers?

(sorry, man, I dunno)

the clock is not above the steering column... and mine doesn’t tick does yours?

Anyway, in all the years I don’t remember anyone having this problem... so I don’t really expect there to be an answer out here - but I'm hopeful...

Look at the Technical Service Bulletin ITB06-012. Could that be it?

no, that TSB is regarding ticking from engine compartment (I have valve lash tick, but that’s entirely different issue)... what I'm referring to here is from the dash area - in cabin.

Thanks though.

I have the ticking described in that TSB but it's (still) faint and it does not bother me. Had I not seen that TSB and read a couple of threads on this subject where people had the same experience, I would have sworn the ticking was coming from the dash, not the engine bay.
Anyways, I understand that this TSB does not apply in your case since the ticking is not on the passenger side, but just wanted to say that even if it sounds like it's coming from the dash, it may be caused by something in the engine compartment... especially if the frequency of ticking changes with the engine speed.
Is there a speedometer/odometer cable going to the instrument cluster that may be causing the ticking (or is all that done electronically in our cars)?

Since the speedo and tach are analog, I presume there is some sort of cable – I cant imagine the gauges are run electronically with wire (but I could be wrong) – initially I was thinking it might be something like that too… but I really don’t want to do the trial and error thing with the dealer.

As for engine bay ticking – yes I am very familiar with the sounds in my engine bay and am positive what I am addressing here is in the cabin of vehicle from dash area… I have a couple of threads here and on my350z regarding valve tick from loose lash when I had cams installed – but the sound I’m addressing in this thread is not coming from the engine bay.

G's gauges are electrically controlled via the ECU.

Have your fuel dampener checked out; when it goes bad you get a valve like ticking sound inside the car (kind of like a diesel engine sound. I am pretty sure there's a TSB about that.

that would be on the passenger side though... mine is absolutely on the driver side near the gauge dome… I haven’t had the car for a month so I cant really do anything to check it out further.

haha yes, i hear a loud @ss ratling noise comming from behind the steering wheel column.
I think it has to do with the telescopic moving steering wheel..thingy..something is loose..
Every time i drive over gravel or bump, it rattles. one day im gonna rip out my steering column and fix this issue..someday when im not lazy..

Interesting... I have an ABS code: C-1109 which is "Speed Control Actuator Assembly Cable Release Failure".

I wonder if this code is associated with the sound?

The sound is gone - but the code returns after I clear it.

I tried to find info from internet search and briefly reviewing the FSM, I cant really determine what it is ~

Page DI-5 in the FSM has info re tach and speedo - and references fuse locations for "Component Parts and Harness Connector Location" (combination meter M19 and M20 in the gauge cluster)... I wonder if the code could possibly be caused by blown fuse? (doubtful)...

Anyone have a clue about any of this?
