Engine eats about 1qt. of oil every 7000 miles.
Everybody is different about oil change intervals and the brand that is being used. IMO, there is no one end all on the subject. Bobistheoilguy.com has plenty of great info on the subject.
For my G, I change at 8K intervals with Q-Horsepower full synthetic and use a Wix Napa Gold or Pure One oil filter (who ever has the best deal that I come a cross). I have no oil consumption issue with 36K mile on my G.
My third car is a '00 Chrysler 300M with 128K miles on it. I change at 10K miles with M1 and recently (last three changes) with Q-Horsepower full syn. I have had zero problems with my M including any oil consumption issues. This car has been great to me!
My wife's '08 Acura TL has a "oil life" sensor. Toggle on the information panel on it will tell you the % of oil life on the current oil. Right now with 6K miles on the oil it is at 50% oil life. I use Quaker State 5W-20 dino oil with a Napa Gold filter.
On my daughter's Mazda 3, the dealership had a free oil change for life promo with a new Mazda purchase. The dealership deal is a free oil change at 5K miles.
In closing, through my experiences changing oil at 3K miles is not needed. It's just a marketing ploy by both the car manufacture and oil companies to get people to spend money. The Mazda 5K free dino oil changes speaks volumes.
