Typhoon 'WAI' -- Heat Shield??
I've reverted back to a WAI settup on my Typhoon intake. I wasn't happy with the idle with the full system (CAI), so I removed the long snout and the idle now is butter smooth again.
What I'd like to do, tho, is add a shield of some kind similar to stock settup to isolate the cool air intake and add some ram effect.
Any suggestions as to what might fit?
BTW, The original CAI settup seemed to yield about 1.5 mpg's less gas mileage than the WAI settup... Comments?
TIA

Thanks Bob. The JWT sounds like the easiest way to go. I'll look around for a used P/C intake.

what do you want a WAI for? sell your typhoon and get the one for the 350z and modify it. or stick with the stock one. the JWT sucks waaay too much hot air from the engine to reap any benefits.

Nuttyprof, Yeh, it's debateable as to whether any of these systems yield much more that stock.
I basicly like the Typhoon I have, but prefer the WAI setup over the CAI setup for smoother idle. The idle is only slightly rough in the CAI mode and isn't too bothersome, but I'm experimenting with the system to try to optimize it- hence the WAI -- so far.
Now I'd like to work on the inlet starting with a JWT shroud, and perhaps adding to it.
It's fun and interesting, and thanks for the input.

Re: Typhoon 'WAI' -- Heat Shield??
Hey guys, new to the forum. I just ordered my Typhoon system and am wondering likes and dislikes for the system. I am also concerned about getting less MPG. Help!
Re: Typhoon 'WAI' -- Heat Shield??
Well, I have the 350Z K&N Typhon. To make it work in the G, requires a significant rework that I doubt many here would be willing to do. But I do pull very good air temps as measured at the MAF. I insulated with a sheet fiberglass and reflective wrap sandwich. It's too complicated to describe here, pm me for details (I've got a word file saved to describe it with linked pics).
The popcharger pulled in air temps consistently 10 degree's above what the oem system does, and that was while driving at 60mph, in town temps will go significantly higher then oem and do so quickly. Oh, the popcharger that was tested had a insulated MAF housing and Z-tube too. Any simular intake drawing from under the hood would be in the same boat. Not saying gains are not possible, but temp wise your against it.
Moreover, I support the logic that the oem system is very good and tuff to improve apon.

We are into Aug.,and we see 100 deg. by 2pm. every day here
in Texas.
I got my heat shield at Grubbs also. I have
since removed it for i like the sound without it better. As for
hot intake air, most of my driving is toll road or interstate and thats
70+mph anyway. Church,golf course, food run's and
movies are 15 to 20min. 17to 20 mpg is normal. The shield
was to pervent rain or high water ingestion. I still think its a good
purchest! Don't let some thinking shade tree wrench
turner convince you other wise . By products from " known"
vendors. K&N has been here a long time!
Good Luck,
