2006 G35 Coupe 6MT Noises
#16
Its a been for while for this thread but I was wondering if anyone was able to get this issue solved?
I have the same pinging noise coming when accelerating at low rpm (1.8k to 2.8k) in hot weather condition. Its 07 6mt coupe. The noise is exactly similar to the youtube video posted above.
I showed my car to a trusted mechanic and he said its due to usage of bad gas and once it starts, it very hard to fix it. Although, I have always used 93, the previous owner could have used cheaper gas. And even though I am using 93 now, the noise will there. That's what the mechanic said and suggested that I try pouring half a bottle of fuel treatment at quarter tank, drive for 10-15 miles, and then pour the remaining after filling up the tank. I have yet to try this.
I have noticed that it only comes when weather is really hot and I have driven the car for a bit. It doesn't come when car is not moving, i.e. reving engine on neutral. So, its possible because of car being under the load. It cannot be transmission noise (as someone suggested above) as my transmission is brand new, replaced by dealer.
Another friend/mechanic suggested it will only go away after a major tune up (i.e. spark plugs, wires, sensors, etc) because cheap guess usually clogs them up.
I don't think there is any effect on the performance of the car because it still pulls hard even under the noise. So worst case, use stereo.
Anyway, if someone has found the solution then pls. do tell.

You reasoning viOlaziOne is logical and similar to what I thought. But have you ever used cheaper gas before? Because even thought your transmission and engine is new, your manifolds, sensors, and stuff is still old. Any kind of build up can also cause the noise to come.
Either way, its definitely a heat problem and there was similar one in late 90's Mercury Grand Marquis cars. There would be pinging noises on a hot day. I am not sure if it was related to cheap gas but people using 91 (a little lower than 93) also reported the same problem. And some people reported that problem was fixed after using 95 (higher than 93).
I am not sure what tube you are referring to but keeping it cool seems like a good idea. Let us know how it goes and whether it fixes your problem. Pls. do snap some photos of what you do so if it solves the problem, I would do the same. Goodluck

WHEW!!!! I know that I'm not the only one. I bought my G Coupe brand new in 2005 and noticed EVERYTHING you are saying, but mechanics and performance guys told me it's normal. I recently put in an Exedy Stage 1 with Lightened flywheel and are hearing the same noises. So if that brings you some peace of mind, glad I could help..

the tube I'm talking about is the z tube .. I'm picking one up and wrapping it and the MAF sensor with heat reflective tape .. I'm hoping this does something otherwise I'm going to try having the dealer retard the timing .. my only other option will be trying a colder thermostat but that's iffy .. I'm hoping someone on the forums has solved this pinging issue because it's NOT a normal thing and to be honest it's annoying as hell that I can't hit the gas the way I want due to a noise I'm trying to avoid

They make a lot of noise.
At 100K my engine still pings, vibrates and rattles like new. . .
I will say that if the car is hot and has been parked, the first time you step on the gas (like pulling out of a parking lot) the pinging will be much worse. Don't know why. I don't worry about it anymore. I do try not to start it hot and floor it right away - more out of embarrassement than anything else.

Check out this thread, specifically post # 15

And in the owner's manual, it states that some "spark knock is normal" under load. WTF? Since when is spark knock "normal"?

Hot weather is the norm here in Texas. Many have noticed that our ECUs are quick to pull the power when it is hot outside. I've noticed a big difference with the Iso Thermal version of the MREV2 and 5/16" spacer combo. Even in rpm ranges where the MREV2/spacer aren't supposed to make more torque, I can feel the increased torque. I think that must be the iso thermal parts doing their job; in fact the engine behaves in the warm like it used to in the cold.
During the install, my upper and lower plenum were dry, except for the valley in the center of the lower plenum. I think the metal brace somehow traps oil underneath.

So, did you experience pinging noises before the install of the "Iso Thermal parts"? And are you experiencing pings after? Days are pretty hot in California, my '06 G35 MT coupe is having the same noises or pinging when warm. Engine is stock, replaced last year with the oil consumption issue. New engine still burns oil... and pings when accelerating (during hot days). When weather is cold, it is quiet like it should be. It would be nice to get this resolved.
Has anybody tried using different oil weight? I currently use Mobil 1 synthetic 5w30.

Any ideas guys?
The high rpm noise is not always there but I have heard it several times. I can't really say what it is (maybe like scratching noise) but there is no loss of power or anything. If my engine was damaged or abused (i.e. run on low oil), is it possible for it to make noise only sometime and be perfect other times? I mean how would engine sound if it was ever damaged because of low oil or redlining? I have never done either but don't know about the previous owner.
Please guys, help is greatly appreciated.
