change the oil filter without changing the oil?

Okay, so I have a relatively basic question as someone with no mechanic skills whatsoever except watching the youtube videos on how to do an oil change on the G35 over and over and over. I've also tried searching for this topic but its probably such a no brainer nobody made a topic on it. Anyway, I got an oil change like only 500 miles ago but I want to change the oil filter from whatever cheap crap R&S Strauss used and from now on I want to do it on my own. So would I be able to take off the oil filter and replace it while keeping whatever oil is in the engine and just topping off? Cause the DIY youtube video showed it leaking leftover oil after the guy drained it, but I'm concerned without draining the oil all of it will come out of where the filter is. I ask because it looks as though the filter is directly lined up with the bottom of the oil pan so by the rules of gravity it SHOULD all drain out but I remember reading somewhere that it was only the oil from the filter coming out and I should be safe to remove it without draining the oil. Yes newb question but is it doable?

NO! You will lose oil when you pull the oil filter off. Just deal with it till 3000 miles.

+1. Don't worry about the cheap oil filter. It will be ok until your next oil change. All the oil will come pouring out as soon as you loosen the filter.

ok thanks for the info. Guess it's just plenum spacer and stillen z tube install for today. off-topic question, how can I "safely" disconnect the negative on the battery so i can let it stand and reset the ecu? Again basic mechanic questions which I have no experience in. Also I do not have an owner's manual.

Just loosen the nut, and pull off the terminal. I wedge the terminal cable in a gap next to the battery so it doesnt accidently move and make contact. Just don't touch the positive and negative terminals at the same time with your ratchet or something lol.
