Hmmm...

Pauter titanium rods: $795 each! Six of these would weigh as much as 4 of the chrome-moly rods...

Hmmm...

Each! Wow....it must be cheaper to take out an insurance policy on your motor. I think I'll look into that.

Spot,

The GB are unfortunately over, tey were held over a month ago.

The car had exactly 40,006 miles. Funny that it happened so close to such a round number... And yes, we were going through the twisties and I was running the car hard, albeit at a low-midrange boost setting. So it is entirely possible that once the rods heated up, they just gave way....

Joe

Yes, I too have to do it rigt this time to have 0 problems (with the engine at least) in the future....

One question... you got custom made 100mm diameter sleeves made, or is it their overbore sleeves (but that's 4.2L)? Confused...

Also, they said that a stock, unsleeved block can do 650whp? Will sleeving help this or does this require decking the motor (in order to prevent the said problem)?

Hi Joe,

Glad to see your car is progressing along hopefully you will be back on the road soon. I am also worried about my rods and have not been pushing my car very hard. It's great to hear you went ahead and sleeved your block for an extra piece of mind. I think the 650whp for stock block is only an estimate. I would feel alot better knowing I have a sleeved and close deck block.

Gurgen,

You're plans for the re-build looks very solid. Can't wait to see what new monster lurks beneath that sedan of yours.

Regards,
Jeff

Re: Bad day ... IT happened... the engine blew...

The AEBS sleeves can be bored out to 100mm because of their closed deck design. AEBS had a set of 100mm bore 8.5 to 1 custom made Ross pistons in stock. Sleeving the block will make the block virtually bulletproof as far as handling horsepower. The 4.2 liter AEBS motor is a combination of 100mm bore and a longer stroke crankshaft. The crankshaft requires even more machine work plus the cost of the crank itself. I am sure we will have enough power without any additional stroke. AEBS only makes one set of sleeves, but you can have them bored to the stock 95.5mm all the way up to 100mm. Basically the machine shop will bore the sleeves to the diameter of your new arias pistons. The sleeves costed about $850 and the machine work I think is going to cost around $1500. In my situation my rod broke at about 2000rpm not even in boost. It happened about 10 seconds after boosting through 2nd gear. I was able to turn the engine off right away. Yes it was still running. My block was repairable, had it fixed for $300, but that cylinder was going to need sleeving. This was another reason I went with the sleeves, it wasn't too much more for the sleeves + labor as opposed to buying a used engine or new block.

Joe...

Ok, I see now... So the sleves made by aebs are not like the Darton sleeves. This is a good option... I will be talking to AEBS really soon. I just heard that installing these sleeves is very difficult, and only good shops can do it. Is this true?

damn.

DAMN!

I am so sorry this happened to you Gurgen. It sure was fun while it lasted. Definitely a sanity check for everyone out there going FI.

In any case my friend, can you pull my plenum off your heap before you recycle it into a badass top fuel sedan. (oh sorry, did I let the Hello Kitty out of the bag?)

p.s. my copilot's seat is open for you at any SoCal events.

Ted

I sure will... I am sorry for not saying anything about it in this past month or two. There was of course no damage done to the plenu... When I build the motor, no parts will be lost, and will give you the planum back as soon as I take off the motor. I will be going with an upgrade to the plenum when I put it all back together.

Finally.... Now, di I really needed to blow my motor to get rid of the Hello Kitty! label?
