Most likely Cam Position Sensor, seems to happen a lot especially in 03-04. It's not an expensive repair, definitely not if you are a DIY guy. But unless you can get the car to start up, I'm not sure if the ECU will actually throw the check engine light (not sure about that).
That is definitely the symptom of the cam position sensor though, the car dies at idle and has a difficult time starting up again. It's the car's internal protection to prevent engine damage.

If you had no other problems beforehand and the car was driving fine, this is most likely your problem. Most other sensors would throw an engine code but leave the car running. Cam position sensor is one of the only sensors that will actually kill the engine I believe. The real question is which one. You may be able to take the car to the dealer or to a nearby shop with Consult-II and see if they can figure out which one it is (the car might throw a code when it's actually trying to crank).

Wouldn't be your battery anyway since the car died while it was running. Once its running, as long as your alternator is working a lack of power from the battery shouldn't matter. Neither does starter because, again, it died while it was running. Was it extremely hot or cold when it died? Anything out of the ordinary? Any symptoms?
EDIT: have you tried resetting your ECU by disconnecting the negative battery terminal and pressing the brake pedal a few times? Might clear any codes which are preventing it from starting. If you hear any grinding or off-noises when/if it starts up, shut it down again immediately.
