Severe Oil Burn

About 1200 miles into my recent oil change with Mobil 1 10w-30, a quart of oil has been burned at 700 miles and another quart at 1200 miles. So far, two quarts have been burned. I have constantly checked and topped off my oil to ensure no further damage to the engine. I know that these VQ engines burn oil like hell, but 2 quarts in 1200 miles? That's just crazy. The car is a 2003 G35 Sedan manufactured in Feb. 2002. Mileage on the car is 151,xxx.

Any opinions?

PS: Has Mobil 1 changed their formula? I'm just wondering if the formula change could've affected the quality of the oil.

Nissan It's one of two spec'd weight oils for the VQ35. The other being 5W-30.

I would do a compression check and see how your compression is. Sounds like you might have bad rings.

Either you are burning up oil or your leaking oil from some where.

I made a mistake and wrote 5w-10 err...molassses. Anyway, 10w-30 is entirely fine for this car assuming you live in climate where the temp doesn't drop below freezing. All the 10w means is that the oil flows a little easier when cold compared than the 5w. Nissan recommeds the 5w to cover their butt. Seeing that this car is located in CA, running 10w is a non-issue.

The problem is most likely the rings. I'd recommend checking all the vacuum lines, verifying the vacuum is good, and checking the PCV valve. If all those are good, then all signs to point to a dying engine. Maybe change oil viscosity (heavier weight) and see what happens. That might slow the death, but it's surely to come, sooner, rather than later.

My 03 sedan has burned a 1/4 QT every 5K miles ever since I got the car 5.5 years ago. It has 80K miles now. I hope things don't change.

I use 10w30 for the summer and 5w30 for winter. No problems so far.

I realize 10w 30 is okay, but I asked him why he'd be using it since we are both from California, i wanted to know his reasoning for using a higher weight

He's probably trying out diff weights to he can try to limit the oil consumption.

I'd try a 5W 40 and see if the consumption goes down.

But it looks like you will end up having to get a leak down and compression tests to see what the engine is doing to eat all that oil.

If it's a 2003, I doesn't matter if it's a manual or not.

I'm in California as well. I use 10w-30 cause it never drops below freezing here.

That depends....my garage insulation is not the best, and there were times when I'd wake up in the middle of winter, in socal, and my garage would be 35 degrees, outside its below freezing for sure.

I do live up in the mountains, but still, it's a chance I'm not willing to take.

The dealership actually recommends thicker oil for cars that burn oil.

I'm in SoCal also.

Also, I notice that the car runs a bit smoother with the thicker oil. I might just mix em together in the future. 3qts of 5w30 and 2 qts of 10w30.

havent had a problem with burning oil with my 04 non revup

OP has 2 quarts gone in 1200 miles, and its a heavier weight. He has nonrevup...i'd say something is very wrong.

OP should check the dipstick 20 mins after the car has been turned off.

I thought I was burning oil too. And added motor oil. After an hr, I went to check back and I was 2qt over the limit.

And I didn't want to mess up the motor so I couldn't drive up the rhino ramps. I had to siphon the excess oil out of the dipstick hole.
