Water pump question

So I've read in a thread that the water pump will begin to leak when it goes bad. Can you guys confirm this?

Over the past 3 weeks or so, I've smelt coolant but not been able to find any leaks.

The fans started to act up about 3 days ago. They would sound like they were on when they normally aren't.

Then today the car began to overheat. When I put on the heater, it blew cold air. I've purged air before, so I don't think it's air trapped inside. So I'm thinking the water pump is bad.

How involved is it to replace it? I'm pretty mechanically inclined, does it involved removing the front timing chain cover? 03 G35 btw...

I haven't replaced a water pump on the G so I can't help you there, but the pump will begin to leak as it goes out. Most cars will have this issue.

Good luck with the diagnosis, maybe someone will chime in to help out.

are you seeing leaks?

I'm told that this is a very involved swap and you should expect 3 sold hours to do it. You do not have to remove the front of the timing chain cover but you will have to loosen/tighten the chain via the tensioner.

ummm these arent your standard style pumps. if the 2 orings go bad they can leak, otherwise not a problem on the vq35. ive changed some before on vq30s with high miles and thats cuz they make noise. check your water outlet gaskets on the rear of the motor. i have to change some on a 03 sedan on monday at work.

where is this exactly?

do vq35's have issues with these creating small leaks/letting some air in?

Doesn't look like I have a leak at the water pump cover.

The coolant level in the reservoir tank is going down as the car sits off for a couple hours. Is that normal?

here ya go. you can see the outlets from under the car if you point a light towards the back of the heads. i just did some on a 03 sedan today....took me about 4 hours to drop the motor, change the gaskets and put it all back together.

I always have a slight hissing coming from the belt area, but this video shows how extremely loud it was the other day. I could hear it on the highway with a window down.

Check out this video:
