Thinking of switching my INJEN CAI to Z-TUBE
Thinking of switching my INJEN CAI to Z-TUBE
I'm thinking of taking my INJEN CAI out and putting in a Z-Tube with a JWT POP CHARGER.
What do you guys think of this idea? I like the idea that I don't have to worry about puddles too much with the Z-Tube.

I switched from the AEM CAI to the Z-tube/popcharger, I just didn't wanna risk it.

Re: Thinking of switching my INJEN CAI to Z-TUBE
everyone thinks your going to get water sucked up into the motor. unless you really try and drive through a puddle as deep as you whole wheel then you have nothing to worry about. It is pretty well protected since you have the bottom panels and the wheel well plastics your fine the chances of it coming derectly into your bumper from the grill just dont be a fool and go flying over puddles its not safe in the first place.

Is there a difference in HP between the 2? Or is it about the same?

Last saturday was the most flooding ive seen in NY yet, my bumper was SUBMERGED fully underneatht he water when i was trying to get to work and my was pissing in my pants, i kept it very slow and under 3k rpm's where the air filter really opens uip, i had no problem thank god but what an experience, you just have to be smart and not worry about it, if you get scared you will not know what to do and hydro lock your car under those conditions, i say dont worry about it, there's a possibility of it happeneing but is very rare!! My thoughts are generally-speaking; not directed to anyone in particular except maybe Sportcoupe3 who started this thread:
Although there's a very slim chance of a CAI causing hydro-lock, why be nervous about it during bad storms or flooded environments, and just have a Z tube/K&N combo which has the same if not more HP increase as a CAI and makes a very mean sound (especially with WOT above 3,500 rpm)! Just my $0.02.

Re: Thinking of switching my INJEN CAI to Z-TUBE
The problem is you can't *always* predict when you need to drive extra safe to avoid water ingestion. Of the two documented Injen CAI water-lock cases (one Z, one G), only one occurred when it was pouring rain, the other was from an unexpected large puddle around a corner. There have been no verified cases of water-ingestion with the Nismo or any other bypass-equipped CAI (that I know of).
Now, if you think that bypass will rob you of power by pulling in hot engine-bay air, my measurements of the Nismo CAI bypass valve showed no significant change in vacuum near the bypass valve at idle nor at speed, across the entire rev range. The only time I read a significant increase in vacuum on the bypass was when I blocked almost all of the filter. This should put to rest fears of the bypass brining in hot air from the engine bay. Due to it's nearly identicaly design to the Injen, and the lack of vacuum at the bypass, we can safely assume the performance is very similar if not identical.
All this said, I coincidentally took out my Nismo CAI two days ago in favor of the stock system, to see if I could detect any performance changes. Subjectively, I noticed the sound chage; it's much quiter (the stock system) from 4K on up. I noticed no power differences whatsoever. I miss the sound though.
Objectively, the G-Tech Pro Competition measured no differences. Wtih the stock intake back on, I ran 7 quarter mile runs (shallow stage, 1/4 tank, 64° - 71°) over 2 hours. My three best 0-60s were 5.382, 5.450, and 5.491. The three best 1/4mi times were 14.22, 14.30, and 14.48. Statistically, these are all in line with my times with the Nismo CAI installed, with no significant outliers at 95% confidence level. This means (at least on my car) the only measurable benefit of the Injen or Nismo CAI is the sound. It certainly didn't make my car any faster.
I'm going to put in a Z-tube soon and see if I get the sound I'm looking for. If so, great, then I can take it out much more quickly for hassle-free warranty work if needed. If not, I'll probably stick with the stock system.

Re: Thinking of switching my INJEN CAI to Z-TUBE
Sometimes you don't have a choice. I was on a access road just coming off the freeway. I had no where else to go. I was going 20 when I hit this water, which didn't look high, As soon as I saw the cars in front of me hit it, I slammed on the brakes to slow myself down because it was very deep. Well, going 5mph-10mph somewhere, I found water coming over my hood of the car. I went to a dead crawl when I saw this happening.
Stillen intake, and no problems. Even opened the hood and checked for water in the box. None.
