SRT 4 neons have NO mufflers... dont have a clue how they get away with it, but its a straight pipe with a Cat in line split into two tail pipes.... most of them just run open downpipe through the little electric unit they sell that opens there exhuast right after the downpipe, some replace the cat....
the car sounds obnoxious but mean.... crackles and will spit fire out the back if you remove the cat and rev that baby high enough... the car is fn crazy fast for 18 grand and sounds NOTHING like a civic what so ever..... i hate them but i respect them....

I'm sorry, but I'll have to disagree here. My WRX with the 3" turboback and stromung muffler with 3" dual tips looked stock, but sounded more like a harley than a honda. Maybe it was the flat 4 and turbo that changed things up, but even stock it never sounded like a fart can.

my buddy's mazda p5 has an aftermarket exhaust, and it sounds more like a v6 than an i4...except at high rpms, then it does kinda sound like a fart can

a wrx is not a honda straight 4, it is a subaru boxer 4. Completely different design and sound.

Yup inline vs. boxer sound totally different. Think about how the Porsches have a unique exhaust note.

Anyone care to demonstrate mathematically how firing order affects sound?

It's not rocket science. Think of bongo drums versus bass drums and you'll have a general idea of what affects sound.
