HATED THE SOUND OF MY NEW Y-PIPE!!!

Over the weekend I installed my new y-pipe and I hated it so much that I took it out the next day. The sound was too loud for me. It sound like a very hollow vroom, ricey noise especially when the RPM's were low in the 1000-2000 range. At higher speeds it was not noticeable at all and the car pulled really well. However, I could not ignore how loud it sounded. Luckily the place that I bought it from will exchange it for a plenum. Anybody else swap out the y-pipe and hate it?

Weird, what brand of Y-Pipe did you install? What other mods do you have on your car? When I installed my JIC Y-Pipe I didn't really notice much of a change at all, (and I was kind of bummed out).

Re: HATED THE SOUND OF MY NEW Y-PIPE!!!

About a week ago, I swapped out the OEM for the Kinetix and I would have to agree (assuming you have/had the Kinetix) that it sounds very ricey and loud at low rpm's. I am not at all happy with the sound nor the constant vibrations albeit only at low rpm's. I have emailed Kinetix about my concerns.

My email to Kinetix is below:

I installed your y-pipe approximately a week ago. Almost instantly I noticed substatinal vibrations underneath my seat, especially at low rpm's. It sounds as though the car is flatulating. I thought this might subside after a week or so. However, this has not been the case. Is this
normal? I thought that these vibrations may be a result of air leaks, however the installer advised that their were not any fitment issues. What are your thoughts?

Their reply is below:

sometimes, the y-pipe causes the mid section pipe to drop down slightly. There is VERY little clearance between the factory mid pipe and the cross brace underneath the car, generally less than .25" This is what is causing vibrations. Adjust the exhaust or the cross brace to allow for some more clearance.

I am taking the car in on Wednesday to check to see if their are any clearance issues. If not, I probably will have to remove the piece from my car and return it as I can't stand the sound

Re: HATED THE SOUND OF MY NEW Y-PIPE!!!

how do you think you should go about "adjusting" the clearance? so the y-pipe lowers the exhaust a little? i'm interested in picking this up. not really for performance or looks, just peace of mind that i'm doing what i can to make my engine (and me) a little happier (louder). so if you take it off, please let me know. louder is better (2 parts 93 octane / 1 part rice).
if you fix it, please share.

Re: HATED THE SOUND OF MY NEW Y-PIPE!!!

Yes I did notice some gains especially once I was past the low RPMs, no ricey sound after that. Car sounded very agressive and like it was really pulling stronger. As for the pipe yes it was kinetix. Cost was $300 shipped (350z.com price). However I pretty much experienced what sux2bu described and I just could deal with it especially at the lower rpm range. As for the mods, all I had was a z-tube and a K&N filter and I also reset the ECU after install.

Re: HATED THE SOUND OF MY NEW Y-PIPE!!!

jasperg35,

I'll know by Wednesday about the clearance. I am not certain how the exhaust set-up will be adjusted (assuming adjustment is required). I will let the pro's handle that.

If a clearance issue does not exist, then I will probably swap the kinetix pipe for the oem. As previously mentioned, I definitely feel a pull at higher rpm's, however I just do not like (what I consider) to be excessive sound at low rpm's. I will keep you posted on the result.

Re: HATED THE SOUND OF MY NEW Y-PIPE!!!

I installed my Y-Pipe from Unlimited Tuning and the sound difference was not extremely adible as you guys describe... An ever so slight lower growl is what I get...I'm not going for LOUD, just something subtle to go with my stock exhaust. Butt dyno felt my low end pick up slightly and maybe a little over the power band... and the fitment of the Y-Pipe was perfect!

Re: HATED THE SOUND OF MY NEW Y-PIPE!!!

i thought the unlimited tuning y-pipe had a different size collector. and i know this sounds a little wierd, maybe a little bit petty (especially for a n/a setup), but the kinetix design, as far as angles, seems to a little more airflow friendly.
my 1/2 cent.

yes the unlimited tuning y-pipe does have a different size collector. A source of some anguish when I first installed it.
I also did not notice any noise or hp difference

Re: HATED THE SOUND OF MY NEW Y-PIPE!!!

I too have the Unlimited Tuning Y-pipe, Noway is there any rice box notes. Not much audible difference on the low end but definitely a more evident roar at WOT. HP gains are rated at 6-9hp. Overall a nice piece.

I have the same issues with the Kinetix. I'd prefer it to be a little quieter at low rpm, and my wife really doesn't like the sound at all.
