Is there a negative to switching to a Z tube?

I wonder because in the case of a CAI, you have to worry about driving through water and getting water sucked up in your filter (hydrolocking the engine) So is there any technical/real negative to swapping in a z tube, and if so, what do you have to be more aware about?

other than it being louder (which is a positive to most people) and paying money for it, I don't think there's a negative... especially since the Z tube is an OEM part on the Z...

I agree that it's the simplest mod out there...and it does generate some power. It's probably the first mod you should do.

Good mod. No negatives at, all only positives, and no worries of hydrolocking.

I have a CAI. If I did it again, I'd probably just go with the ztube. Seems the CAIs are more for looks on the G35 than anything else. Maybe a little better breathing at high rpm.

Pain in the butt to clean the filter.

If I went with a Z-tube, could I still use the stock airbox or do I need to get a seperate filter? How does the Z-Tube interface with the MAF?

Yes you can use the stock airbox. I actually think that it is best to use the stock air box with a K&N drop in and not worry about CAIs. The MAF sensor is landed before the Z tube, so no worries there either.

Re: Is there a negative to switching to a Z tube?

There is definitely a REAL NEGATIVE to switching to the Z tube....I can't keep my damn foot off the pedal and my gas mileage is suffering for it. Seriously though, to me, the differences are most notable on the highway with quicker throttle response. A great, cheap and easy mod...

Re: Is there a negative to switching to a Z tube?

There is an aspect of this install that seems to have been omitted. The installation of this piece will sacrifice low end hp for the sake of high end hp. Not by much, but it is definitely something to take into consideration.

I want the bulk of my hp where I would be driving the majority of the time and this is why I have not done this modification.

I'm not sure how true that statement of "sacrificing low end HP for high end HP" is... but changing it out will not significantly change anything except for the sound... the performance gains will be small and you probably won't feel it but you'll hear it! hehe

I've got half a dozen dynos that prove the low end hp loss is a myth and nothing more...

Don't forget that the Z-tube has been known to rub against the A/C lines. Be careful, or it will breach your air tubes.

Re: Is there a negative to switching to a Z tube?

I thought the problem with the AC line rubbing was with aftermarket brackets for CAI. The Z-tube is a perfect fit when installed properly....my 2 cents

Re: Is there a negative to switching to a Z tube?

Yeah, I have no issues with the Ztube and A/C line. I have
a bunch of room between the intake and the A/C line.
The Stillen HF/AB coupled to the Ztube leaves lots of room.

Re: Is there a negative to switching to a Z tube?

I think the only problems (more than 1) have been with the injen intake rubbing against the ac lines.
