Oil consumption, SES light pops on at dealer
Hello everyone,
Basically, to make a long story short, I am wondering what the P1084 code means and if anyone knows if the necessary repair/s will be covered under the power train warranty.
For those who are interested, here's my long story(I need to vent):
So, I took my '05 G35 6MT in for a simple oil consumption test yesterday, yet I got much more(isn't that always the case?). Murphy's law certainly held true in this case.
First, the setting up for the oil test. I had to wait 45 min(I had an appointment) before they even pulled my car up. All they were going to do was measure the level and tie off the dipstick.
Second, as I was in the office the guy showed me the general walk around paper showing whatever they found on the exterior car before they worked on it(understandable), then I noticed at the bottom comments section that they commented that "SES Light On". I couldn't believe it, somehow this was a mistake, as I have never seen this light on in all the time owning this car. I assumed maybe they got the wrong car or something goofy like that, but sure enough, they walked me out turned on my car and there it was. In the thousands of times I've started the car, the one time the car was out of my hands and service kid got in it to pull it up was the time the light decides to pop up, just my luck huh? Some people could think of this as "fishy" but I just figured it was the doing of the car gods. Of course they wanted $130 something just to tell me what it was, after talking to the manager he helped me out and reduced it by 1/2. Whatever, I decided to do it.
After waiting another hour or so(now for the consumption test and just reading a code), I was pulled into the guys office and he explained that my oil filter had a slight leak so they couldn't do the consumption test (understandable) and that the light was set off because of the code P1084 which he explained was some sort of Variable Valve Timing sensor or solenoid that was likely malfunctioning because an oil issue(I guess it operates off of oil pressure). So he told me that they reset it and that it was probably caused by the oil leak at the filter(which was very minor) or the fact that I had low oil a few days ago because my car drinks nearly 3 quarts every 6000 miles which is THE only reason I'm here in the first place. I get in the car after getting nothing accomplished and the light pops on again. Associated with the light is a high idle and very sluggish acceleration.
I got my oil changed 3 days ago so whoever put the filter on at the Texaco Express Lube place I guess didn't do it correctly so I brought it in and they did it all again for free which was nice.
As for the light and the sluggish engine, I've got another appointment scheduled. I seriously doubt anyone has read my rambling thus far BUTdo you guys know if this Variable Valve Timing Sensor issue(from code P1084) would be covered under the power train warranty?? The guy still has not responded to me on this issue and I would believe it would be since it is a component of the VVT system and the engine is adversely effected.
All in all, not happy with the dealer and their attitude. Besides the manager that helped me out with the price, there was absolutely zero customer service. Btw, I drove an hour to THIS dealer because the other dealer was even worse and pretty much told me I was screwed because "the power train warranty was 4yr/60k"(clearly wrong). When I got in the car and the light came on again, the adviser just looked at me like oh well and told me they didn't have enough time to look at it again and that I prob would have to pay the $130 diagnostic fee again. I know times are tough and nickel and dime'ing is what these dealers survive off of, but at least be proactive and try to assist your customers with a smile on your face. I'd expect better customer service at a Saturn dealership that was to go under in a week, after all, these WERE our $40k cars we purchased.
