building my engine
building my engine
I am planning to build my engine for TT. I was thinkging about that 7k stroker kit, but that is out of my budget. SO i am considering about getting crower rods, and get JWT Cam shafts just to make my engine stronger for high boost.
What do you guys think?? Would this parts fit stock pistons and other stock parts? please give me some opinions
Thanks

Re: building my engine
If you are going to do the rods....do the pistons also....8.5 to 1....or 9to1 compression . The pistons are not that strong either and you'll need to lower the comp. for high boost
Couldnt afford it when young...gonna play when Im old

Re: building my engine
The VQ crank is forged, so it is very strong. The consensus on the weakest link is the conn. rod bolts, then followed closely by the connecting rods themselves. What is funny is how strong the crank and main bearings are (4 bolt with girdle), but how weak the rods and pistons are.
If you are building an engine for forced induction, go with rods, rod bolts, pistons, and new head bolts.

Re: building my engine
Thats kinda funny... The hassle involved in building a VQ engine is NO where near the hassle of doing an RB26DETT swap. The car would have to be completely rewired due to the fact the ECU won't run the RB. And, since everything in the car is ran off of the ECU, basically EVERYTHING would have to be rewired!

Think about the cost involved...
roughly $30,000 for an older engine.
With 30 grand you could build up a VQ engine to output more power. Also, without AWD that much power would be useless, unless you tub the hell out of the car.

Re: building my engine
I would think the pistons would be strong enough. The only weak link of a piston would be cracking on the inside in the wrist pin area and I believe most current car pistons are strong enough in that area.

Re: building my engine
One very weak area of the OEM pistons is the land over the top ring. Modern OEMs move the top ring as high as possible to reduce un-burnt fuel emissions during cold operation and to reduce the "effective squish volume". However; the side effect of this method is a very thin and brittle ring land which will not handle abuse well from even mild detination under boost. If you look at a good forged turbo piston you will see how much lower the top ring is from the crown and a thicker and more durable land.
Re: building my engine
Well, it is a well known fact that the rods are terrible for FI. It is also well known that the pistons are NOT forged. If you are going to replace the cheap rods with expensive rods why in the world would you not replace the pistons why you are in there? The only reason I can think of is money. If money is the restricting factor at this point, then FI isn't for you (whats another $1500 on top of everything else?)

Re: building my engine
I wish my pistons only cost $600..... I went with a custom compression ratio and got an overbore.
By the time you buy the pistons and pay to have them installed I would say $1500 is a fairly good estimate, especially if you get the 0.01 overbore.

Re: building my engine
Doing an RB26DETT swap is not such a crazy idea. I think it was Top Secret that put an SR20DET into a 350Z a couple of months back, and an RB swap is a pretty similar effort. A clean RB can be had for less than $4,500 (as an entire front clip including ECU, trans and harness). A single turbo RB25DET might even be a more practical solution, as they are a lot less expensive, and usually come with a very robust 5 speed, as opposed to the AWD 6 speed. And alot of hot Skylines use a single turbo anyway. You could run the whole car off the RB ECU....the real problems become instruments, ABS and VDC. I think the ABS is solvable but difficult. As fas as VDC, I'd say near impossible. A replacement ECU might facilitate some of this, and could give you traction control. As far as instruments, an LCD replacement dash (like in a race car) might avoid the very difficult instrument cluster issues.
It's only a matter of time before someone does this swap, but I'd bet the first one will be a Z. These RB's are VERY solid for a bit over 400hp with stock internals; and if you want to do the bottom end, you can double that figure. I just hope you have a friendly emissions inspector.....forget it in CA.
