knocking on startup

Hey guys I have a 03 G35 oupe and today when I started the car i heard a knocking sound coming from the engine. The car started fine but idled little rough. i opened the hood and started the car again; it idled fine but the knocking was still there. Another thing that concerns me about the car, besides the knocking, is that after I shut down the car and checked the oil level, the dipstick was full of oil all the way up to the top; not the full amrk, the top of the dipstick. Is that normal? is it somrthing I need to worry about. I love my car and don't want to get rid of it. Thank you guys; please help.

Are you aware that you need to wipe off your dip stick and reinsert it to get a true reading? Can't tell from here why you have the knocking issue, maybe you should take it to a qualified mechanic just not Infiniti....

why cause an Infiniti tech doesn't know how to check oil ?!
Park your car on a level surface, start it let it run for a minute or 2, shut it off, remove dipstick and wipe it down, leave it out for 5min, re-insert and then check the level. If your engine is knocking you're either very low on oil or there is some internal damage..

Coupetech, do you honestly believe this is the only way to check your oil level and that you go thru this routine every time you check someone's oil level? I seriously doubt it! I've worked with and watched both Nissan and Infiniti mechanics for 17+ years and it's my findings that around here Nissan people are trained better. Especially Chris the GT-R mechanic at my Nissan dealership, he's so sharp I'm surprised he hasn't cut himself....lol

This is crazy to even read this... The EXACT same thing happened to me yesterday, and when I checked the oil, it was just as he said, so I wiped it off, and it was just the way he said again, so, I wiped it off, reinserted, same thing every time... So then I let it run for a bit, cool off, and checked again, and it was normal.

So don't be hating too hard.

You do need to wipe down the insanely designed dipstick and re-check each time. If it's cold, the dipstick tube may take some time to drain but you can generally see the level becasue the stick is not completely covered.

So long as your oil level (too high or too low) is not the issue, I'd suggest checking on the PCV valve. Pretty typical when the weather changes that they get gummed up, block the release of crankcase gases and effect low speed idle. You can generally restore their function with carb cleaner. It's an easy and good thing to do even if it's not the culprit. Hope this helps and is the most simple solution to save your car

the oil level is fine, my concern is about the oil going all the way up on the dipstick when I start the car and remove it. Is that normal??????

Yes, that is normal....can you imagine what a mess it makes if you forget to push the dipstick all the way back down....?

Same thing when you're refilling with oil. The dumbstick needs to be in place or your fresh oil will be on the floor.

thanks gary, that makes me feel at ease; I changed the oil and PCV valve and it seems as the noise went away and hopefuly it stays like that. Changing the PCV valve was very easy. Thanks everyone for the quick reply's

LMAO, thats def a valve lash issue.

The knocking is the major concern here, if you can post a video, it would be much easier to assess the situation. Does the knocking go away after its reached operating temperature? And, do you hear it in higher rpms as well? (hopefully not!!)
