Can we make our mirrors work like BMWs?

I am not sure if this is even feasable, but was just thinking about this today as I got out of my friends 330 and back into my g..

How impossible would it be to wire the driver's (and possibly passenger's) mirror to point down when the car is placed in reverse (when the circuit is connected to activate the reverse lights basically)? I hardly know anything about wiring, but I imagine it can be done... key word, imagine.

Anyone have any input? I find this to be a very valuable function and anyone who has driven a BMW I am sure would agree..

it's definetly possible. just need someone that knows what they're doing. i know basic electronics and from what little i know it shouldn't be that hard.

that function is getting popular with other luxury models, not just BMW... my parent's TL does the same thing... I'm sure its not difficult but would someone be willing to put time and effort into doing it is another story...

I think KPierson was toying with the idea. He's the guy that developed the VDC off and window rollup module. I see the challenge being to have the rear-view mirror return to the proper position. You would have to incorporate some type of feedback from the mirror motor.

You can easily tap into the reverse lights to tell when the car is in reverse and when not. This would be the same as installing a rear camera.

Re: Can we make our mirrors work like BMWs?

We had thrown it around, but it is a lot more difficult then people think. We are trying to create modules that don't require cutting any wires for the time being. To do the mirror thing you will have to rewire your mirror motor. This would require two SPDT relays, not a big deal, but you would still have to cut the factory wires.

The next issue is the lack of feedback. The module would have to be time based. This leads to the next issue. setting the proper amount of time. You would have to have a learning routine. This isn't a problem, except for the fact that you will NEVER get the mirror exactly where you want it the first time! 'Tuning' it would be a nightmare.

This project is still on our list of things to do, but it is a very low priority. There are way too many complexities, too hard of an install, and too big of a support problem to consider doing it now, with as small as we are.

As far as I know no one else manufactures any controller like this. This would be an extremely small market.

I thought I read somewhere that the JDM Mirrors fold in when parked? Does anyone remember this or am I thinking of something else?

JDM Skylines have folding mirrors, some US Maximas have this feature, and UK Zs have it. It sucks they left it off of our cars!

Re: Can we make our mirrors work like BMWs?

I was going to send this directly to you at first, but figured I would just make a post about it..

I understand that it's not a simple project, I just wasn't sure from the wiring and tuning side of it if it was really worth the trouble. I mean, how much more effort does it really take to press the mirror down manually...?

thanks for the info.

yeah, the JDM mirros fold in when you get out of the car and the mirrors aim downward when the car is in reverse. I am not sure whats required to wire it though. And I think it is probably only available in AT models.

I was under the impression that the JDM mirrors don't automatically fold in, you have to tell them to, and the vehicle has to be on in order for them to move (at least that is what my UK Z friends tell me).

In all honesty, I think the feature is very nice to have. I hate having to manually put the mirror down, and then back up. Like I said before about tuning, you never get it just right the first time, you have to sit there and make slight adjustments over and over again. Luckily in Ohio we don't parallel park very much!

Auto tilt and auto fold function is available as options for JDM skylines. So it can be either just plug and play or a series of complicated modification to your car.

Maybe you could relocate mirror control similar to what some of us did with the VDC.

As I look at the picture, I'm wondering if you could just swap the hazard switch with the mirror control.
