Crawfordzcar & 300rwhp NA G35... the real deal!

Well, I just finished a 15 minute conversation with Doug up at Crawfordzcar.com and you're not going to believe this...

First of all, I got permission from Doug to share this information since another person on another forum "let the cat out of the bag", but was skimpy with the details.

The scoop:

Doug is designing new cams (completely new profile), he is porting heads, doing a "radical" valve job and combining all of this with his headers, cats and plenum package AND the Crawford-TS ECU reflash. His goal is 300rwhp NA and he is trying to make this completely carb certifiable.

The truly amazing part is that he will know for sure within the next couple of weeks if this is going to work. They have done extensive flow booth tests, many hand calculations, and now there at the final stages of installing and dyno testing.

Doug said more than once that the 300rwhp is their goal, but it is currently unproven. He doesn't like to share data like this without proven results, but since I sent him an e-mail, with data that was cut and pasted from someone who said more than they should have online, he gave me permission to share these details with everyone.

I asked about price data and his response was that it would be similar to the price of going FI, but would be much more of a reliable and long term solution to getting power out of our G's. In his opinion 350-360 crank horse power is the "safe limit" for longevity on our cars. He said the light weight aluminum block on the VQ35DE, unfortunately, was just not built for more than that. He also said that anything more would almost certainly lead to trouble down the line.

That's all I know, but I do request that a slew of people do not call and harass Doug. He told me to keep a close eye on his website in the next few weeks for details. He also said that someone in Tenn. has obtained 300rwhp NA with cams, heads, valve job, etc... but is having "issues" and Doug is trying to take what he's learned and "fix" the problems that the other person is having.

It should be a very interesting Christmas...

Very sweet. I'm staying tuned for this. Thanks for the update Neff. Props to Doug for trying too!

I'm supposed to be getting all the head work done here as soon as I can ship my motor to Crawford. I can't wait to see what kind of power a VQ can put down at 16psi.....

Wow, 300rwh is about 360hp at the crank. That's very impressive. Can't wait for this package to be released.

Randy... 2 words... ka boom!

Suk... I agree w/ you. It looks like Doug has come up with a Naturally Aspirated solution to the Stage I and Stage II Stillen Superchargers, but w/o the "questionable looking hood". Considering that Stillen offers a 3 year engine warranty, this should lead us to believe that their setup is well within the VQ35DE's "safe operational range" so maybe this will be a good LONG TERM power solution that those of us with daily drivers will like.

Just imagine... no S/C whistle or whine, no belt chatter (being eaten up frequently), no belt slipping, etc... yet you will have more rwhp on tap than a E46-M3 and still have the stealth look of a stock car.

The only thing that crossed my mind is that IF the TS-ECU is thrown into the mix, what happens to the guys like me with the 2004.5 ECU's?

I also learned something else for those who are interested. Doug told me that his header, cat and plenum combo alone gains 20rwhp at "peak" and 40rwhp at "redline". I asked him what "peak" was and he described that as being around 5000 rpm's. He said that he decided to work w/ TS because he was generating SO MUCH additional hp after 4000 rpm's (through redline) that he was initially interested in bumping up the rev limiter to take advantage of this large increase. (He did not say that he was working with TS because the cars were too lean with these mods, which kind of surprised me in a really good way.) After 6-8 interations with TS, Doug said that they were able to adjust timing only slightly (less than a standard TS ECU reflash), richen up the mix slightly, and gain 6-8rwhp over the majority of the power band. Doug also said that his headers MAJOR advantage were that the torque increased tremendously down low (where exactly he didn't say), but that you can really feel their pull.

Finally he said that they recently lowered the price of their headers to $1100 and only $300 for install. This sure makes me want to take the wife and kids to Tennessee for a short vacation.

Re: Crawfordzcar & 300rwhp NA G35... the real deal!

is there porting and polishing involved, i hope the cams can be used for F/I? Yea, I'm greedy to. One more stupid question, what exactly is porting and polishing, i imagine that polishing means cleaning the engine, but does porting mean actually drilling or sumn in the engine?

Re: Crawfordzcar & 300rwhp NA G35... the real deal!

Yes, porting means removing material within the flow passages to increase volume. Polishing will smooth the flow (or swirl it, depending on the swirl pattern), but will also get rid of ridges at casting seems, etc. The work around the valves is the same principal. Remove material to increase flow and polish to shape in-cylinder flow/combustion patterns.

And I'm glad to see someone pushing forward on the NA frontier. I want to stay within relatively trouble-free limits. Been the hi-power/turbo route before ('97 Mitsu. GSX) so now I just want a respectable, reliable ride that doesn't raise areas of potential concern with every ride. I'm ok with not being the fastest anymore. I just want to enjoy being fast.

So sticking with NA this time, I was already eye-balling the Nismo S1 engine internals package (cams, valve springs, retainers, ECU). It'll be nice to have other options.

Hey Bro

Been VERY VERY busy with school. Will be done with midterms Wednesday, and then full 2.5 weeks off from exams. Let's hope my engine comes in next week. Will become more active soon, promise..... I've been mostly lurking around the forums....
