Serious Horsepower Gain for $800

I now have factual data as to the best mods for the $$$. I took my completely stock G35 Sedan (six speed) to the track on September 10th and made four runs, My average MPH for the four runs was 92.15 with an average ET of 15.296

Then on October 8th I went to the drag strip again. This time with grounding wires, Kinetix intake plenum, Z Tube, and a NISMO air cleaner. My average MPH for the four runs was 94.50 with an average ET of 15.11.

Tonight (November 5th) I went out to the drags again with the same mods as mentioned above but with the test pipes installed running through a stock exhaust system. My average MPH for the four runs was 98.32 with an average ET of 14.57.

Using my trusty horsepower calculator and a vehicle weight of 3600 pounds (including driver and fluids) I have picked up 47 horsepower over stock. So for a total investment of less than $800 I've picked up 47 horsepower, which equates to $17 per horsepower.

This is some serious horsepower gain for not a lot of money. My best time of the night was 14.379 @ 98.87 MPH. You should have seen the look on this guys face after I smoked his 5.0 mustang GT.

I have a Stillen cat back exhaust system on order, after the intall, I will let you know how much faster it goes.

One thing I did not mention is that we are about 1,200 feet above sea level, which will slow the car down three to four tenths, as compared to sea level.

Temperature and humidity (as well as driver skill) all figure into the equation. What are your 60' times? A marked improvement in those would indicate better driving.

Steve--my 60' times (with one exception) have been fairly consistant. My fastest time of the evening had a marked improvement in my 60' foot time. What I have been most concerned with has been my MPH because this is my HP indicator.

azcougerman,
How much power could the butt dyno feel with each added mod?
(Looks like very solid speed gains, but wondering how much you could actually feel.)

I notice my better times are in the spring and fall when it is cool.

The best bang for the buck at the drag strip is going to be slicks!

Re: Serious Horsepower Gain for $800

Each 11F cooler has the density potential to increase power by 1%. Each 333 feet [assumming normal barometer] higher altitude has the potential to decrease power by 1%.

OEM uses SAE standard [sealevel 29.92" and 60F and zero humidity to reference published torque and horsepower].

Any time ambient temp is above 80-85F you get extra degradation as part of Summer protective mode software. Same with higher than 194F coolant.

The density reduction from Summer to winter and the Summer mode can easily be [7.5 +10%] or 50 HP difference between the extremes PLUS of course the BTU differences in the seasonal fuels and oxygenates which can add another 5% to the variance.........up to + or minus 30 HP from 60F.

Re: Serious Horsepower Gain for $800

Serious horsepower gains for very little dollars invested would be nitrous. Though plenums and high flow cats seem to offer good returns, tires and driver skill will reward you with better times!

Re: Serious Horsepower Gain for $800

Test pipes remove the the cats altogether. These will give you the most flow out of anything. The draw back that depending on the ones you get, you will get raspiness at 3.5 to 4k rpms.
They are a good cheap mod if you dont mind the noise and the fact that you wont be able to get your car smogged later on..

AZCOUGARMAN: how did you go down the track... Did you ride the clutch... or just popped it at a certain rpm...?
