North America G35 Drivers, Please help! How to identify '05 engine from '04?

Hi all,

I am going to become a G35 driver in Taiwan and I need some help.

Due to stricter emissions here, '05 G35 sedans in Taiwan will maintain 260 hp output, compared to 280 hp in the U.S. and Canada.

I am wondering whether they put '04 engines in there, or it's just an ECU detune. I need to know before I put down my money since G35 here is almost twice as expensive as in U.S.A.

From all the net surfing I've done, I would say '04 engines are different from '05 ones at least in exhaust camshafts. There may be some differences in the exhaust and intake system, too.

Can someone help me, when you visit your shop, by asking whether there is a way to visually distinguish '04 engines from '05 ones?

I guess many pre-'05 owners are interested to know, too. Thanks in advance!

p.s. I am pretty sure we have North America spec G35 here, since the odometer is in miles, which we don't use at all.

If I had interpreted the official press releases from Infiniti correctly, there will be two varieties of the VQ35s for the '05 US Spec G35. The base is essentially the same as the '03 - '04, while the 'Sports' model will have the revised 298hp variant that has added varaible timing exhaust valve, hotter cam and naturally a different ECU. Having said that, if my assumption is correct, then the Taiwan spec engine will be essentially the same as the '03-'04 & base model '05. Only it will have been detuned at the ECU to make 260hp (vs. 280hp). That'll be good new for you, since ECU mods will surely be released by 3rd party developers and you should expect no less than 280hp then.
