need a mechanic's advice - valve cover issues
Hey guys,
Even though this is my first post, I've been searching the forums for the past several months. Here's what I have to work with:
2004 G35 Coupe 6 speed Manual with the Brembo package. About 91,xxx miles on the odometer. Black on black with Navi. Bone stock.
I picked up my G35 on April 1st and since then I've been trying to fix a slow leak coming from lower front passenger side valve cover. Throughout my search on the forums, I've taken the forums advice by replacing out both the valve cover gaskets, scraped off the old RTV sealant and reapplied a fresh layer directly to the corners of the head, replaced out the PCV valve, added 5/8 washers to the valve cover bolts on the lower side of the passenger side valve cover to increase the amount of pressure being applied, and even bought new valve cover bolts in hopes to stop this leak BUT it's still there. Slowly but surly I still see it leaking.
I am fresh out of ideas how to stop this leak. It previously got to the point where enough oil was seeping out and dripped onto the alternator to cause it to short out and had to be replaced. I'm open to any reasonable solutions to stop this leaking.

you are doing something wrong then. im pretty sure the gasket rolled when you tried to slide the covers in....cuz ive never had a problem with them leaking unless the gasket rolled and got pinched.
Thanks. I never thought of that one happening cause I was under the interpretation that the groove within the valve cover itself holds the gasket in place and cannot move. It's definitely worth rechecking mainly cause its free. It'll be my 3rd time this month taking off the valve cover to try to fix this leaking issue. At least on the brighter side, I'm getting faster at it with just using hand tools =/
yeah, just cuz the gasket fits inside the groove...doesnt mean it cant come out when you are trying to get the covers on. just check the gasket all around the cover with a light and mirror once you get them in place, but not tightened down. once it all looks ok, you can press the covers down on the tubes and bolt them down.
I have pinched valve cover gaskets twice and never noticed either time until I started the car up
. Also have a look for cracks in the valve covers, not likely but one less thing it could be.
