Re: G35:Synthetic or Regular Oil Poll

Most people who are paranoid about the lack of the protection offerred by 5w20...basically say screw it, I'm using 5w30.

Sometimes it has backfired on them, and Ford has voided many warranties due to engine oil selection.

Honda is more lenient, they say use 5w30 if 5w20 is not immediately available, but go back to 5w20 at the next oil change.

Re: G35:Synthetic or Regular Oil Poll

Their testing is good enough to see that the engine will go past 100k miles, and satisfy a large majority of new car buyers. Beyond that, they'd like to see you buy a new car again, anyway. Even a 1/4 mpg on the CAFE means bucks to them, so they recommend 5W20. If you run 5W30 and get a 1/4 mpg less, it doesn't matter to them because your individual selection of the thicker oil won't affect their CAFE score, only the testing done with the 5W20 in the engine in a lab affects that score. So officially, they'll highly recommend 5W20, and they won't void your warranty for 5W30 as long as it has the appropriate certifications. Unofficially, they probably don't care if you run 20W50, as long as it's a quality oil.

Re: G35:Synthetic or Regular Oil Poll

As I promised to do earlier.....

From the G35c manual, page 10-5

"INFINITI recommends mineral based oils."

I know I said "conventional" earlier.....this basically means a Group II to Group III oil, people refer mineral-based as conventional oil.

Castrol syntec is hydrocracked mineral oil, thus still falls under Infiniti's recommendation.

Re: G35:Synthetic or Regular Oil Poll

Bottom line guys, Synthetic is a waste of money unless you modify your engine.... 1-2 HP gain using synthetic is NOT going to be felt in your car, you will not even see a better 1/4 time with the 1-2 hp gain... Now if you add the basic H/E/I then the extra gain in HP from the synthetic makes more sense... but if you plan on keeping your car stock, then stick with regular oil and put the extra money you save towards new rims

You may have something there. Except the rims are fine, but the tires aren't gonna last 5 minutes tho! hahahaha
Thanks everyone for your input...............

Re: G35:Synthetic or Regular Oil Poll

I called an Infiniti service dept. He said that Japanese cars are made with Silicon seals. Some Fully synthetic oils have properties that in time can eat away at the Silicon seals. I'm going to check with other dealerships for verification.

Re: G35:Synthetic or Regular Oil Poll

hey yuichi, what about semi synthetic? where does that fit in on the poll?

After 1,700 i put in castro semisynthetic. I'm going to used this again for my 3800 change.

I change the oil myself. This way I can be assured everything was done right, and nothing is missing. with this dip stick it is hard to tell the oil level.

Re: G35:Synthetic or Regular Oil Poll

Since it's been resurrected, I'll add 2 pennies of life as well.

At 7500 miles I'm switching to Mobil1 SS 5w30, primarily to extend my oil change intervals to 7.5K, reducing the number of times I have to duck under my cars each year.

I do 36K/yr on my G and 30K/yr on our Sequoia. Using M1, for both cars, I'll average 8-9 oil changes a year as opposed to 17-18 changes with conventional oils. And with conventional I would be spinning that wrench every 3 weeks; removing the underbody shields from both vehicles will become a pain in the neck.

I also did a cost comparison, and the extended change interval evens out the increased cost of the Mobil 1. Another plus is for the environment, 51 qts of synth oil vs. 102 qts of conventional oil to recycle each year.

So apart from the extra protection I think a synth would provide, I'm changing over for practicality and convenience as well.

I use synthetic for years. It does keep the engine cleaner. Had a 92 Prelude with 228,236 miles on it, and sold it for 5000. I also do my own oil change on my 07 coupe. Just a comment.

Then again, the dealer changes the oil and filter, washes the car, and fills the tank with gas. Plus, I get a loaner G35 while I'm waiting. Hmmmm, that's a great deal. Maybe I will take it in after all.

Do all dealerships do that????

it's an extra 49$ for me .. 20$ for a regular oil change and 69 for synthetic..
