seeking your advice on 2005 G35 5AT differential swap

hey guys, I'm will be doing a differential swap on my 2005 G35 5AT. My car currently has an open differential with a 3.357 gear ratio. I'm hoping to get your experience. There are a few local scrap yards that I could pull a complete differential from. I can either get a VLSD 3.357 for $100 or a VLSD for 3.538 for $250.

For those who have done this swap in an 5AT, was it a noticeable improvement between the 3.357 and 3.538 gearing? Does this change effect the speedometer? Appreciate any advice!

I always thought our cars came stock with a 3.5... I hear the 3.9 is amazing! Just won't get the best fuel economy on the freeways

The difference between a 3.3 and a 3.5 is small but still noticeable. I believe only the 06+ had speedometers that were effected. Go with the 3.5

maybe I should look at stepping to the 3.7 from a G37. I'm not too concerned with gas mileage... unless of course it's a big drop. Has anyone tested their mileage before and after a 3.3 to 3.7 swap?

Depends on the years. The diffs from both the G35 and 350Z all have the 4-bolt flange, therefore they are interchangeable.

I found a 3.5 VLSD differential locally for $95 so couldn't pass that up! I replaced all the seals and inspected the gears, it's in very good condition. I just swapped it out tonight. I was alone, so I bolted some plywood to my floor jack for a lift. ha! It actually worked great! I didn't remove the exhaust, and only removed one side of the sway bar to move it back a little. The entire swap took just over 3 hours.

The car definitely feels a bit quicker. I can feel the traction with the VLSD when taking off hard. A more than worthy swap!
