Oil Change Frequency

I have read other posts on oil change frequencies, synthetics, etc. Does anyone have an opinion on what the usefull life is of regular grade 5W-30. I typically change the oil between 4 - 5000 miles and which I think is a safe bet on engine protection. I have a friend however, that neglects to change her oil, sometimes up to 10,000 miles. I insist that she do it more regularly or something bad may happpen, but the car is relatively new and I guess she believes that it is not that important. I am hoping for some outside insight to help prove my case. It sometimes frustrates the hell out of me because she won't make the time to do it.

Re: Oil Change Frequency

It depends.

If her driving habits don't qualify for the severe maintanence schedule, and the oil filter and oil are good quality, and the oil level doesn't drop too low during that time, it may not be that bad. Our G35's claim a 7500 mile oil change interval under the non-severe schedule. The big issue I'd see with this is the oil filter clogging up and opening the bypass valve - no longer providing any filtering. It could cause some engine problems down the line. Of course, she may sell the car long before those problems become evident. You might want to try to convice her to at least use synthetic oil if she's going to run that long between oil changes.

Some people just don't see the point in properly maintaining their vehicles. They operate under the "if it ain't broke, I don't need to do anything" principle. If that's the case, there's probably not much you can do until the engine seizes up and a mechanic says, "that'll be $6,000, and you could have prevented it by checking your oil more often."

Re: Oil Change Frequency

i have been changing my oil every 3000 miles ever sice my first car and never once had an engine problem. as far as our g35's after seeing that the oil filter is no larger than a shot glass, i will deffinitely be changing every 3000 miles!

Re: Oil Change Frequency

Hey all,
I'm right at the 3700 point and need to change my oil/filter. Probably a stupid question, but can I get a filter at any local autoparts place for this car yet? Anyone have a filter S# for me? Also, is it a royal pain to change? Thanks!

its a pain to change, you have to remove the plastic panel underneath, i believe there's 12 bolts to remove the panel alone
