11:1 Compression Pistons and Octane

I have been contemplating the Wiesco Forged 11:1 Pistion + Eagle Rods package deal from CZP Performance (https://conceptzperformance.com/Cart...on.php?II=3084)

Has anyone with 11:1 pistons installed ran into issues with knocking from inadequate octane fuel? In Colorado, it is difficult to find stations that offer anything above 91.

Not interested in being advised to go buy a used vortech kit, just want insight from someone with knowledge regarding potential issues with upping compression ratios via the pistons.

i have not personally used the 11.0 in the vq but my k20 came stock with 11.0:1 compression and i ran 91 octane with no problem. i am not sure if the elevation difference will make a difference. i am in socal. but as long as you have a good tune i think you will be ok.

I run CP 11:1 pistons with a Vortech SC and have no knocking. I do try and use 93 octane when available but have used 91 octane with no issues.

When swapping pistons do you have to get new rods? I am short on cash and I want to get slightly bigger pistons and a hone hoping I can stop my oc issue. I was thinking of getting wiseco as well or maybe Manley performance.

Save up some money and do it right! You can run 11:1 on 91 no problems also dont get any of that stupid oct boost crap. It takes 10 "numbers" to move oct 1point. You will be running 91.7oct instead of 91.0 oct.

It is all relative to your tune, nothing to do with anything else

And if you replace the pistons, you should replace the rods with stronger ones at the same time. Rods are known as the weak link

Thanks, I know that is a noon question and I apologize for that. I have been turning wrenches for awhile, but never had to do anything with pistons/rods. My next question is how large can you go before the stock intake/exhaust doesn't provide enough airflow? I don't have the money to do full intake/exhaust, hone, and the pistons/rods. Any help is appreciated.

If you dont have the money, do simple bolt ons and save untill you can afford yo go big. If you spend 5-6k you can get a good used turbo kit and the the other thing you need to run 400whp on a stock motor.

I'm not looking to go boosted just yet. I just want to fix my oil consumption issue while getting as much HP as possible without replacing full intake/exhaust systeem.

Man, honestly, the labor you're talking about just to change the rings is not worth it. If you're truly on a budget, find a new motor for $1500 and just swap it. Just make sure you get a warranty with it.

I also thought of doing that. I know that back when these things were under warranty most people got motor swaps. I live in Hawaii so I'm not granted decent shipping prices. Where could I find a reputable business to have a motor for my 05 with a warranty? If I could get a used motor that would let me build this one up. Thanks again.

The stock compression ratio is 10.3;1, you might have to pull some timing but you can do that with Cipher.

So, from what I'm understanding....you want to get bigger pistons to fix the OC issue? That may fix the issue, not sure. I'm at 205K and had my engine built at 173K, but that was because I wanted to go with boost and figured I'd replace all the parts while it was being built. When my engine was built, I thought my oil consumption would be gone, but I'm still consuming oil. Now, I kept on my oil consumption and when my rebuilder took my engine apart he couldn't believe how great the condition was. That being said, he said just to get standard size pistons since I had no wear on my block at 173K. It's possible that if I got bigger pistons, my issue may have been resolved. Not sure though.

Basically, what I'm saying is that its a waste of money to replace your pistons if you are not going to rebuild the engine completely. Then if you are going to rebuild the engine, you might as well get boost if that is what you are interested in. Lastly, its possible that by replacing the pistons, you may still have oil consumption like I do.
