Help please: Transmission fluid

Sup everyone.. Hope yall enjoyed the holidays.

I have a few really quick questions. I checked my transmission fluid and it is really low to the point where it says hot. The color is also brownish(no sight of red).

My question is can I go purchase the correct transmission fluid for the car and fill it myself? Or is there more to this issue and I'll have to go to a shop for a drain/refill?

Thank you.

You can do this yourself. It's as easy as buying Nissan J or S Matic transmission fluid and draining it and filling it from the transmission when you have time.

Thanks for replying. Glad to hear its something I can fix myself. I've changed my oil plenty of times but have never fooled with the transmission before.

It's just as easy to change the transmission fluid as it is to change the oil. One drain plug to open, drain, re-install drain plug and fill.

It's super easy to do. I bought 4/5 quarts of Idemitsu Type J or Nissan Type J, $1 pitcher at Rite Aid, and drained the fluid into that. I then replaced the same amount I took out back in the system, I recommend doing it while the car has sat overnight. I believe heat causes the fluid to expand, so you can get a false reading. I did this every 50-100 miles three or four times.

There is another more advanced method where you disconnect return line to a pail, run the car, and replace the fluid at the same time until it runs clear. I wouldn't do this unless you have another person though.

That would be a flush... Which is "NOT recommended by the forum."

That type of flush is using the transmission itself though to change the fluid. It's not using a machine hooked up, which I thought is what most people are against.
